Stupid blue, help?

Hey. Need a bit of help or advice here.

My laptop has, as of today, started crashing (screen goes blue) just after windows loads. I enter my user password, windows loads, then bam!
I am currently posting from said laptop, in safe mode, and with no problems at all.
What it be? Is it overheating? Dust build-up or something? Or would the fact that it works fine in safe mode dis-count this?
I am also, as of today, getting a message when I turn it on saying it doesn't recognise the battery and will not be able to charge it (it charges fine though).

    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks!

    Try in safe mode

If windows then try last known good

clues about the OS might be handy

undo what you did most recently ?

if its like win XP or 2k then you could consider a system restore from safe mode ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Pj!

    It's Vista lads sorry.
And am getting it everytime. Including the does not recognise the battery one as soon as I power it up.
As I said all is fine in safe mode (im using it now)
I tried system restore but it says I have no restore points.
And I have done no changes as of recently. I watched a film last night going to bed, all fine. Switched off, and am getting the problem as of first thing this morning. Laptop is the same as when I have bought it, no hardware changes. No problems until today.

Right lads as I said I can start the computer in safe mode without any problems.
I can also, I have just figured out, start in guest mode without any problems.

So is it Maybe, perhaps? some file that starts up in user mode that doesnt start in guest mode?(i never use guest mode. It all looks very bare in here)

Might be a virus that's crashing it, rather than doing whatever it's supposed to do. If the virus is attached to something that doesnt start in Safe Mode.

unless the OP has vista business license then a new license will be needed, also will need XP pro media that works on that brand of computer

are you offering to buy it for them ? :pac:

Post something helpful or don't post at all. And no matter what you think saying "remove vista and install xp" isn't helpful.

Sounds like it might be a problem with your RAM, open the PC take the ram out, blow any dust off and put it back in, that might help, else it might be something running in the background that is using up your memory! If you know how much RAM you have, reboot the PC and you may see a set of numbers count very quickly from 0 to 256 for example this tells you how much it is finding.

Sounds like you have some corrupted files, as safe mode starts the machine with the minimum set of drivers needed to get it working to allow you to fix it. If you have the original OS disk, put this in the machine making sure the CD Drive is bootable, you may need to change this in setup (often by hitting F2 on start up). You should then get an option on the CD to restore / repair the installation. Try that and see how you get on. Hope this helps.

if a guest account is working, then you should be able to create a new user and use that as it looks like some of the local setting or application data associated with the original user profile are fecked.

I have an admin, user and a guest account. I only ever use the user account. But the admin one also goes blue after set up. Bit of a pain now to be honest!

    Thanks lads for all help.

Have you tried the startup repair option that's in Vista ? When I was using Vista a while back I used this option to sort it out , here's a link to a walkthrough
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
if you use this option make sure to BACKUP any data you need in case it goes belly up

Wait, if you can get into safe mode then you should be able to find the error log - im in Win7 right now and cant recall, but

if you go to Start and type/search for Problem Reports and Solutions app - that should have the error log in it. You should find an error log relating to the Blue screen you had. That will contain an error code that will help pin down what went wrong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Pj!

In safe mode now Overheal. Went to Problem Reports and Solutions App and went into 'View Problem History'.
It's not showing up any errors for the last few days (or months for that matter).

It is very helpful as I belive (99%!) that it will fix the problem.

go onto google and see all the problems people have with vista.

need admin rights to even copy files over ffs.......
install this update before you can copy this file.
    IE randomly freezes
    system randomly freezes and/or reboots
UAC is a pain in the hole
aero is...what exactly is aero used for? to take up 1 gig of ram?

I have a fairly hefty M1710 and got fed up with vista, it was installed on the system when I got it.

Was driving me nuts, and its not like Im running it on a celeron.

I removed it and put on XP, and since then I am having no problems.

My sister in law also has a xps laptop on vista and surprise surprise, IE keeps crashing, her system keeps freezing etc.

At the end of the day I think it can safely be said Vista is one resource hog and the worst OS ever devised, what gains has it over XP...

DX10 my ass......and dont mention it being more secure, vista is a hackers dream

For the last time child, that is not helpful. "Help my Honda is brokeen" "Durr Hurr Hurr by a BMW that will fix your problem!"

    Okay try this OP,

Go to the Control Panel > System > Advanced Settings> Advanced Tab > Startup and Recovery Options

You need to disable the Automatically Restart checkbox. Now when the error happens again you will have as much time as you need to read the blue screen and the Stop-Error code it contains. Go ahead and recreate the error by booting normally.

    lol:D

well its fair to say that the chances of a honda breaking would be very remote in the first place....

I bets the OP will end up putting on xp anyway..:p

Cheers Overheal (really appreciate the help!).

I tried as you said. The thing is the blue screen doesn't contain any text. It's just blue, with white stuff flicking through it. It just stays like that until I power off. (I suppose its possible the white stuff is text but very very unreadable if so).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Thats definitely perhaps a hardware issue of some sort then. If it were software or OS related youd still be able to read the damn thing. If it is a software issue then its bets on the video driver being corrupt. Try reinstalling it in safe mode.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Pj!

Just to be clear, windows starts, all the icons load up on desktop(as normal). The programs in the bottom right of the screen (on the taskbar) load up.
And usually just towards the end of those loading in the taskbar, it all goes blue. So could it be one of those programs, one that starts in admin and user mode but doesn't start in guest mode? (guest mode is very bare, its never used).

Any external USB things attatched to your PC? Do you have a virtual drive? Sounds like hardware alright. Load up in either guest/ safe mode. Run device manager and have a look to see if ther is any exclamation or question marks beside any of the hardware.

    OR

In safe mode, In the search box in the start menu, type msconfig and press enter. Under start up menu, have a look at what starts up when you boot your machine. it sounds like something that's loading at start up and then crashing your machine. one by one Disable anything that you don't recognise and restart you machine each time. It could take a while but you may find the corrupted software that's loading.

how many things do you run at startup anyway? eg. instant messengers, Steam, Antivirus, Firewall, etc etc.

This prob wont work but you could try going into the bios and restoring default settings., should be there somewhere.

also you could reinstall drivers for the gfx card

and reinstall and/or update the mobo bios.

    if all else fails...install xp

If its a hardware problem then how would installing XP benefit it? Most blue screen errors generally pin point to hardware issiues or driver issiues, beyond the OS control, I don't know but my PC is Vista, runs fast, doesn't crash, BSOD etc. My bros pc a dual core, 4 gig ram and 7600GT with Windows XP runs ridiculously slow especially starting up for some reason, also sluggish during use, with up to date drivers and all that, ironic a 7 year old+ OS would run that slow on modern enough hardware. And it only has the basics starting up so its not that or a virus hes gotten or anything,

Since there is no Free Norton all norton is up to date: if your serial key is active you can always download and install the latest version.
    if all else fails...install xp

 Start another XP vs. Vista thread. Thats really the best place to debate the matter.

Have him start a thread here, we could probably get him sped up a bit.

    Nah, Avira AntiVir,

Cheers man. I actually put the machine together for him so I've been looking at it and just find it slow... Will upgrade it to Windows 7 when it goes retail as Windows 7 runs really well... It actually runs faster on my laptop than xp did :pac:
