Backpack as carry on???

Can a backpack be taken as carry on luggage or must it be checked in? Going to asia for a spell and just wondering as im bringing it over half empty could i just take it as carry on?

It depends if the pack meets the airlines carry on size dimensions, and doesn't contain anything prohibited by security rules.
