Whats the story with these? Are there any legalities around owning/using them?

Legal to own. However its an offence to store Garda radio frequencies in a scanner or to listen to Garda radio transmissions......not that that deters the criminals from using them!

So they're legal to own but illegal to use? I was thinkin about getting one for the aul-fella, he can't get out much these days and we live in an area where there is always dodgey stuff going on....

So are they completely illegal to use then?

Funny you should mention that, but he did get a radio from the local church a couple of years back to listen to Sunday Mass, and you could pick up all sorts on it! :D

As far as i was aware its not illegal to listen to garda channels from the comfort of your home.

However if you use it in the comission of a crime you could be charged with posession of an article under the TAFOA 2001 , the same as a sliding door lock popper (burglar) or screwdriver (UT head). eg section 15 Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.

Anybody have any links to legislation involving a specific offence of listening to a garda frequency. Sure they are transmitted on public radio waves.

Every gouger and major gangland criminal has one hence why there are so many bogey calls, eg the criminals testing garda response times. Its why mobile phones are used and armed units do not use radio channels ect.

Every garda knows it and every major criminal knows it.

As said already, its not illegal to own one. Or to listen to the Garda in your own home, provided its not recorded or used incorrectly. IE, a burglary etc.. (Agaiin this is down to the Garda...)

So my advise would be just listen in your home, don't bring it outside with certain FRQ's lock into it.

Besides everyone tom has one, and the mobile phones are used more I would say.

    Hi,
We have a Uniden UBC785XLT scanner and are not sure how to programme the frequencies into it. I would be grateful if someone could help. Also what is the meaning and difference between Channel, Frequency, Bank, Band, Tag, Range.
    Thanks

Back on topic, the guys and gals of the Aviation froum would be very helpful, alot of them plane spotters with scanners. I, just to clarify, have absolutely no knowledge of scanners, so I'll just go back into my corner now...
