If you were working the last 7 or 8 years you should have the contributions to qualify for Jobseekers Benefit, and therefore avoiding a means test!

    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/meansassess.aspx

This explains the means test. You'll have to trawl through it for Jobseekers Allowance. Use Ctrl key and f to find specific text.

Basically the means test for Jobseeker's Allowance depends on whether you are married/living with a partner or single and any savings you might have. If you are married/living with a partner and they are working, their earnings are assessed as means against you. You are allowed to have €20000 in savings.

http://www.inou.ie/download/pdf/working_for_work_2008_oct08.pdf. This is the 2008 version and some qualifying conditions, length of payment and amounts have changed. The INOU should be able to send you a copy of this book.

    Hope this helps.
