Macrovision blocked at startup?

Since I attached a new external DVD recorder I keep getting a Windows pop-up about 2 blocked programmes at startup - Macrovision Update Service and Macrovision Update Service Manager.
Are these necessary or valuable in any way? Can I disable them or will it have unwanted consequences? I've searched on Google and all I get is HOW to do one or the other, but not why and what will/could happen.
I'd really like to trim the startup entries, not add to them, but I find it really difficult to know what's needed and what's not - thanks for any input.
