As the topic says, please recommend something recent enough to rent on DVD that's not only entertaining but will also have the girlfriend jumping with fright because I find that amusing :D

    I'm thinking about The Strangers?

    The Shining.

Some dont think so. But those 2 little girls give me the hee-bee-gee-bees!

edit: just read the full post...eh..its not that recent. The Grudge was scary enough

-Five Days of Night (SH**E scary)..Vampires and the likes.

    - Captivity (A vile sick film about a sick man who captures this girl and does weird stuff to her throughout ...UGH)

One Missed Call - the Japanese version, not the Western, you need to read the subtitles but feck I was scared for days afterwards! Not fun!

I've seen The Grudge and The Shining, both good though.

I've seen the former and the latter might not go down to well, keep 'em coming though! :D

Oh and apologies, I should have made it clear it's to rent on DVD!

    REC is a perfect shout.

I would sugest Them rather than The Strangers.

Recent-ish movies that are easy to find:

The Ring/Ring 2 (the remake; sequel not as good but still has its moments)
The Grudge/Grudge 2 (same as above; the remake also)
Event Horizon (Sci-Fi to boot, so something for everyone)
The Thing (OK, so its old, but this one is definitely scary)
The Orphanage (fairly mild but is creepy)
    Pans Labyrinth (as above)
Pulse (fairly poor plot but plenty of freaky creature/supernatural moments)
Some of the Newer Hellraiser movies are pretty damn good and have incredibly unsettling make up effects and creature creations. The problem being I can't remember which ones exactly: the older ones are, well, old, and the newer ones are a mixture of hit and miss.
    The Eye (original or remake)
REC (quarantine is better by virtue of being the exact same movie in native english, but isn't out on DVD)
    The Ruins
    The Mist
Teeth (not really scary but squimish)
Severance (bit of comedy in there for relief)

The Strangers is absolute tripe and is not scary. The Ring and the Grudge (the remakes mind, not the original asian films which are OK but not remotely as frightening) really freaked the **** out of me in particular are are the kind of movies that tend to not just unsettle girls but have them weeping in your lap.

Ones to avoid like the plague just in case they cross your mind:

    The Messengers
    When a Stranger Calls
    One Missed Call
White Noise (though White Noise 2 is quite good)
Captivity (the jewish money grabbing version of Hostel)

I would go with 30 days of Night for a good ole scare. I think someone suggested that already.

The Strangers was okay I thought, not that scary tho.

REC didn't do it for me, except maybe towards the end. I accept most other opinions of REC are good.

Terrorfirmer suggested White Noise - scary film! Liked Severance, good film, but not very scary.

Most that came to mind seem to have been covered, not necessarily recent, I'd add:
    Vacancy
and at a push, Creep - not a great film but spooky enough in parts.
The Devils Backbone - very good, but its in Spanish if you don't mind reading.
    Dog Soldiers

    -Coley.

    +1 for REC.

You should be mad at him regardless. They're both awful films :D

    The Exorcist

By a country mile thats sure to scare the bejaysus out of her.

If that doesn't work try any film with Dan Ackroyd. :p

I would have went with [Rec] or The Wicker Man.

    The Wicker Man.

Do you mean the remake with Nick Cage?

if so i would put that in the category of unintentional best comedies.

The Wicker Man with Nicholas Cage is a remake??

yep and do yourself a favour and watch the superior 1973 original

I find most western Horrors to be quite tame tbh. Get yourself some asian horror if you want your GF to be scared, although she might have nightmares for the rest of her life and need to be committed, lol.

Just watched A tale of two sisters a few days ago. Starts off slow but will have your skin crawling long before the final act.

My other half was able to sit through REC without turning away from the screen, but there where scenes in A tale of two sisters that made her bury her head behind my shoulder. Its not really gory, it's just the tension it builds can be unbearable at times.

Probably too late with this now but, Switchblade Romance is a good one. French with English subtitles but you forget about it after a few minutes.

The opening scene is "memorable"...
