    Hi;

    Thinking of running one or two cross country runs, do you have to use spikes?

    Are spikes expensive?

    you don't need to , but you will get getter grip. I saw some on save in elverys for 30 euro. You can use them for cc and track which we do in the summer. well worth buying, You can use them for years!

    If you only looking to do the odd cross i would say just go with a versatile spike that you can use for track to. only will cost like 5 euro roughly for different length spikes top improve grip for the Cross country races

    you don't have to wear them but most people who try them once never go back - try to borrow a pair for a race? there cheap compared to trainers and don't wear out - my spikes are probally about 8 years old now. 21 posts.

    Can anyone recommend good versatile spikes and suggest where I could buy them? Thank you

    If you are a track runner and willing to fork out the money many of the lads i know use the Nike milers for both and find they do good job. Otherwise Most of the elvery's stock are fairly versatile and cheap cnat go wrong with Aasics for basic spikes

    I decided to give cross country a go, so I bought a pair of spike shoes this morning in Runways, Parnell St. D1. €45 plus €5 for a set of 12mm spikes. I looked for them yesterday evening in Elverys in Blanch, but they didn't have my size. [edit] though they did have ok looking shoes for only €30, not sure exactly what sizes they have. It looked like the stocks were running low.

    Eventually made it out to Templeogue for BHAA race, with 15 minutes to spare. Bit of a rush, but really enjoyed it I have to say. And the spikes are the business. A lot of people don't bother with them, but you could see them slipping quite a bit.

    Hi Woddle. Yes, first BHAA race, and first cross country ever actually. I was pretty happy to do it in 36:18. My ankles are not the strongest, and in a few places running across the gradient, I found the left one was getting wobbly. But I made it anyway. Must find some exercises to strengthen them a bit. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and hope to do the next one (in Swords).

    Just wondering do many of you train cc in spikes or do you reserve them purely for racing?

    I just use mine for the races as I do about 95% of my training on roads.

    During my XC season i try to do odd session on grass and only use spike for these intervals and racing but my spikes are very good support wise and would reccomend doin alot of work nin them unless they have good support aroun the ankles
