Does NTL support NNTP

    Hi,
I used to be with Eircom but switched to NTL for the speed and cost saving. One drawback I have found after changing is that I can no longer connect to newsgroups through Outlook Express/Outlook as NTL does not seem to have an NNTP connection address. I rang support but they did not seem to know what I was talking about. I used to use alt.comp.hardware etc. extensively and a number of other tech groups. Anyone have any ideas other than using the web to browse them.?

Eircom is one of the few ISPs that run an NNTP server and propagate newsgroups.

Basically Warez and binary groups has killed NNTP ISP support.

While you can't access the eircom server unless you are on eircom there are some ReadOnly free servers and a number of pay servers, any of which will work via any ISP.

Since you appear to be using Newsgroups/Usenet for original Text function (much like an unmoderated version of Boards) you could try access via google groups. The paid servers are really an alternative to P2P for warez in many cases so may be expensive for what you want.

google for newsgroups or usenet subscription to go down that route.
You might need a gmail account to post, not sure. Generally I use a fake non-existant email address such as nochoppedmeat@notspam.net to avoid bots harvesting my email from posts.

    http://groups.google.com/group/alt.comp.hardware/topics?lnk=srg&hl=en

I prefer a real newsreader rather than GoogleGroup interface, but since I'm unwilling to pay nearly as much as my phone bill...

Due to lack of moderation and p0rn spam etc many specialist web based forums (like Boards.ie interface) are now more popular and exist for various specialist areas. Some niche interests now use primarily Yahoo Groups (which I hate, but have to use) instead of usenet at all.

Lack of moderation and warez has killed NNTP

yes a shame, I used free agent for years till shillls, trolls and porn merchants drove me away from usenet.

Hey,thanks for all the comments folks and in particular to DingDong....get yer case of beer for that one, take the rest of the day off, respect, and any other compliment or combination of, you wish to pick.I plugged in "news.upc.ie" into outlook express and was back to my ole stomping ground in seconds. Its good to be back, I built a whole Access database once using just a basic knowledge of Access and VB, and a lot of help from alt.com.access. I know I can access them from Google etc but I prefer the old text based system. Thanks again
