Spontaneous Reboot

    Hello there,

I don't know if im in the right thread but anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got an amazing CPU from Ankermann bout 2 months ago and recently it's been rebooting spontaneously - No warning messages or error reports or anything like that. It isn't set to reboot automatically and i don't get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) or anything like that. Having scanned and rescanned my computer, and checked all my software, cleaned what little dust out of the main board area i'm near convinced that it's a problem with the power supply. I say this as it seems to reboot when the tower is moved a bit or something around it disturbed. The fan speed has also dropped to 70% and the temperature has risen from 10c to 30c when idle.

I'm running XP on it and the specs are as follows:
    • Intel Core2Quad Q8200 - (4x 2.83 Ghz)
    • Nvidia GeForce 9800 512mb
    • 750GB sAMSUNG 7200RPM 32mb cache)
    • ;G GSH GH20 LS15 DVD-RW Dual LAYER LightScribe
    • 6gig kingston ram DDR2-800 PC800
    • ASUS Mainboard P5Q Pro, (GBL/R/F/DDRII) (Dual PC2-6400U DDR2)
    • 600Watt Power Supply
Im rapidly losing my hair trying to figure out the problem and Ankermann have yet to get back to me.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mosey

Overheating? Check CPU temperatures, GPU temperatures etc... Also faulty memory can do funny things, try running memtest86 overnight and see what it comes up with

    Hey thanks for that.

The company finally got back to me (around 12 o clock last night!) and they told me to change the power supply in the computer (i've been reassured that this won't affect my warrenty provided i don't damage anything).

Is changing the power in it difficult?

Not at all. All the connectors are designed so that it's impossible to plug anything in incorrectly.

Just be careful not to stick screwdrivers etc into the power supply - it can hold a charge for quite a while after it's plugged out:eek:

Great. Now to find a 600 watt power supply and i'll be sorted.

    Thanks.

    Ok,

Does anyone know about Mouduler power supplies at all if they're any good?

I was looking at one here in Peats and it seems pretty decent

Kind of an old thread but im a newish poster here:).
My cpu is the same as thread starters and memory type but thats about it.

On psu's Im using a 70 euro 500w jeantech orchid one from pc world:eek:,
I also bought a 16 euro 480w one from pixmania:eek: again and it ran the pc just fine for a week or so,
I changed it out and put it in my D820 rig as I suppose at that price I shouldnt expect too long a life from it.

I fixed the problem by getting a beefy power supply. I got a modular 800 watt power supply from Peats (Cost near €200) but it's been running perfectly.

CPU fan speed is still down though and my temperature is still hovering at 30 degrees (It was at it's minimum of 10 degrees) but no problems. . . going to get my power supply exchanged with the manufacturer.

I may not have read this properly before but 30 degrees doesnt sound very hot at idle,10 degrees sounds way low.
I suppose it might get down to 10 degrees if your cpu fan was running at full speed at idle, but it shouldnt unless you set it to do that.
The cpu fan speed is supposed to go up as the cpu load/temperature increases, not be at full speed at idle.
my q8200 is overclocked so it runs about 39degrees on core 1 at idle i think it runs about 27 degrees at idle if it isnt overclocked.

    My cpu fanspeed is800-1800rpm.
At idle it runs 950 rpm approx and under full load goes up to 1700-1800 rpm.
By full load I mean a test program like prime 95.Under normal use it wont go above 1300-1400 rpm.
I think the only way your cpu fan could run at full speed at idle is if you turn off the auto fan control in the bios(or maybe if you connect it to some unadjusted 12v power header.
