So what would make a good new Irish TV channel?

Over the past couple of years we have seen a number of new Irish channels, Channel 6 (now 3e), Bubble Hits, Buzz TV, DCTV and recently MagnetInfinity TV. With the exception of Channel 6 which obviously did spend some money securing rights for reruns of many US shows most are evidently running on very small budgets.

My question is what do people think would make a good new Irish TV channel?

I would love to see a nice simple rolling news channel. Nothing as big as BBC/Sky, low key but agreements set up to rebroadcast CNN/SKY overnight with additional ticker etc to save money. We really need a channel to turn to for our hourly or 15min news fix. The radio isn't enough and UK channels - well they don't cover Ireland. Presentation wise, like the old ITN news channel, news every 15/30mins, could be recorded with updates as and when news breaks over the day etc.

I have only really seen Bubble Hits and for what it is, it is doing a good job. When compared to MTV, Bubble Hits is far superior, mind you, thats not hard as MTV plays very little music these days.

One thing i would like to see more of on Bubble Hits is Irish Music. Maybe some more stuff from the festivals.

As for news, well INN already broadcast the news for about 30 local radio stations. The same feed could also be used for the news.. mind you, they would need to tart up a studio for it. More in depth analysis and video footage could then be used in between bulletins.

I would agree, I'd love a scrolling news channel... I often wondered why RTE dont broadcast their RTE News Now 24hr internet stream on satellite or cable... www.rte.ie/live/?news

In an Ideal world some one would have the courage to make some TV. Not just news.

Personally I would like to see a prime time schedule done well first, then think about daytime/morning time.

    6pm Imported Drama
    7pm Magizine Show
    7.30pm Quiz/comquiz shows
8pm World News (Not just UK, US and Irish News)
    8.30 Documentry
9 Monday - Thursday Drama, chat on Friday
10.00 Classic Drama such as Prime Suspect and Cracker
11.00 repeat the above until you get it right.

    (National News on the Hour)

Maybe RTE could do an Irish version of MSNBC in the US or CNBC in Europe? It could mix news and business with documentary's. You could repeat Prime Time and Q&A as well. It would be very expensive for RTE to do rolling news 24 hours a day so you could take the CNN feed or something similar at night. When a serious story breaks then it would turn into a rolling news service for that period of time.

I would rather see other news not just US and UK and Irish news. Perhaps they could broadcast an Australian News channel and a few European news channels at night.

UK or US news would be more relevant than say Australian news, no? We already get Euro News and France 24 at night already on RTE and TG4.

I don't know how relevant is US news to us. It has become very introspective in the last number of years as has UK news. I am sure that Australian news is just as introspective but it would give us different choices about what news we receive and a different world view. The same goes for news from New Zealand and Canada, from an English speaking perspective.

While I know we are going through a rough patch a Spanish language news would also give us some different perspectives, they could be subtitled for non-spanish speakers. The same goes for many of out other neighbours across Europe. And with the high number of people from non-English speaking countries it would also be of interest to them.

Do you honestly think that EuroNews gives a world view of Europe or a European view of the world? France 24 also isn't very different.

Also if I want to receive CNN, BBC, Sky, CNBC, Bloomberg, ITN, FOX etc I can get satellite. I am not saying that they wouldn't be part of the news channel I am just saying they shouldn't take over the news channel at night.

We talk about choice in Television but often we get exactly the same thing on each channel.

Look at channel 6, there was a tiny amount of choice on that service, but now it just becoming TV3E which will eventally be filled with first runs of TV3 shows, or repeats of TV3 shows, That isn't choice.
