Recently got smashed by a car on my 5200 (the older model of this same geometry n all) so Im lookin at this as a replacement for mine..
It has got rave reviews (I researched it alot on the net) and since its so close to my/our? geometry you cant go wrong...and class new look to it now since the make over of 2008. big changes include:

much stiffer in BB area (40% was the figure Ive seen)
much chunkier tubes as a result, but really sleek looking
DS chainstay (one of them) thicker than other for added stiffness
stiff and responsive and great trackin yet comfortable and compliant on 100k+ rides.

frame couple hundred grams lighter (inc fork)
integrated mast cap (instaed of a seatpost!) (hard to explain, but think of the seatpost as an extension of the frame (like a Pro TT bike) , but the dif is the saddle (connected to a tube wider than the SP sits over it and is adjustable like normal SP!

anyways the thing is a dream an I wan one now!! :pac:

Still researching where I will invest my savings. I'm sure I could get a bigger bang for my buck (I'm surprised nobody has tried to sway me from it) but I've always wanted a Trek.

Will make a few phone calls on it today to see if it still can be got and the best price on it. I'll also probobaly head North this weekend and check out a few of the shops that people have been talking about on here recently.

Evans currently have it at £1899 and that is what I am using as an upper limit. It only seems to be available in a 54 and a 56 there.(http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/madone-52-double-2008-road-bike-ec001543). I may need a 58..

The seat post is interesting. I believe from my reading that there should be enough movement in it so that you can avoid cutting. If I have to cut, then I will look to another bike.

jesus that is stupid money! €2000~ for 5.2 trek (get 2 and use one for a rainy day :pac:)
which are the shops up north you are referring to then?

oh the mast cap is NEVER intended to be cut (you know you saddle height right? well just get the framesize that is in the range of that mast cap offered...go to the trek site for the geometry chart and y'ull see what I mean.

oh..and if you can find out the MSRP on them for the uk/NI let me know will ye?

Made a call to the WheelsNmotion place in Armagh this evening. The person I was talking to was very helpful.

They do not keep the Madone in stock, for obvious reasons, and they have to be ordered in. He told me that it was not possible for them to get a 2008 model. We talked about the 09 model but it was too big price difference for me (£2500 for this)

It was only afterwards that I thought about it (it had been a long day). Surely there are plenty of 2008 models out there that did not sell. So why can a shop not order them in?

Assuming you can make the trip, I have seen plenty of Madones in Joe Dalys. I'm not sure on prices though, probably not as competitive as any UK dealer, but they may do a deal on 08 stock.

I have 2008 5.2, I cannot fault the bike in anyway.
As said in other posts the geometry of these has stayed pretty much the same over the last number of years. That said it is different to other bikes and can take a couple of spins to get use to.
Only problem I have is that the seat mast that came on mine is the standard size(80mm I think) and I am on min insert, so I am ordering the middle size seat mast, more out of precaution that anything else.

I would be surprised if you find a lot of 2008 unsold in the bike shops, mine had to be ordered from the States and that was last June. Even if you do it will be only €200-300 cheaper that the 2009 model at best.

I had previously read some of the thread on here about getting a courier (i.e. DHL/UPS) to collect and deliver. I spoke to somebody in Evans today. Apparently it is a request they get all the time, but it is not something that they can do.

Will check out Downeys this weekend as well when up North and will try to drop into Daly's tomorrow (I had forgot about them).

Thanks for the comments and PM's - sound advice as usual and not hearing any major negatives.

All I have to do now is find one worth the money and then justify to myself once again why I want to spend the money on it..

I go to London every few weeks if you like i could collect it from an Evans store for you and arrange DHL/UPS to collect from the office i work in

1 complication I forgot to mention is that the The ShipToStore policy that they operate means that the person who orders and pays, must be the person who picks it up and ID is required.

That's a generous offer Peter. Fair play to you. I will talk to you directly about this in PM should I have no success myself...

No problem sure let me know and if you need me to do it

if ya want you could probably order it in my name over the phone and just say im using a friends credit card or something i may actually be able to fly it home with me as my company pays for my baggage

Trek has a policy of not allowing its cycles to be mail ordered to customers. It means that theoretically all bikes should be set up properly and the company should be less likely to be able to take legal action over incorrect set up, however it also has the added advantage of preventing retailers engaging in a prcing war, thus keeping the brands products priced high/uniform thus enhancing the prestige/brand value.

A few months ago I had a look around for the 2008 Madone 4.7 and they were sold out in a lot of places. Most of the guys in the shops said that they sold very well in 08 and I would be lucky to pick up the exact config I wanted (a triple 52cm). In fact Trek Europe didn't have any 4.7 left in stock and all that was left was whatever was in the shops.

Was in a bike shop yesterday and spotted a 2008 Madone 4.7 for €1900! I guess not a bad price but not amazing value either. Still it's in my size and with a triple(which I want). What do you think? Any equivalent bike at a better price?

A bike in the shop is worth two in the....eh, bush.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for me ) I found my bike up North today. Thanks RO 06 for the tip off.

Took me a bit of time to find Downey's shop (http://www.downeycycles.co.uk/) - it's actually on a farm yard in the country...!! only for a few signs on the trees I would never have found it. I actually thought twice about going into it when I saw the farm yard.

I'm glad I did now..!! It's like Aladdins cave in there. Quiet a large amount of stock ranging from kids bikes right up until high end Treks. He had 08 and 09 Madone's in stock.

Diarmuid only seeing you query about an 4.7. There may have been so you should give Seamus a shout.

Was also in WheelsnMotion today as well. Small shop with limited number of bikes on display (few low end Treks, a couple of Ridleys and a Planet X). Young lad was very helpful in there.
