Dead laptop?

    Hi folks,

My laptop just shut itself down the other night without warning. When I turn it on now the screen is black with some white text saying 'part of set up file is missing or corrupt. Press 'r' to repair.' For this it tells me I need the original set up CD.

If I press r anyway, the Fedora screen comes up, with two file types/paths to choose from, and a third titled 'other'. I press either one of these and I'm brought to another blue Fedora screen and prompted to enter previous owner's username and password. I see at the bottom of the screen 'stephenlaptop' which suggests a username, but I can't move on to next screen, which i guess would allow the original CD to repair/re-set up.

My flatmate happens to have a Windows XP repair CD but can't use it without the password/username for Fedora.

I hope I can repair it and not have to buy another, but can anyone suggests ways around the above problems? Previous owner is in the US and not contactable. Or is there anything else I can do? Can it be fixed? I have it two years and as it is pre-owned it's about 4years old now.

I'm not very technical, and so, if i need a new laptop could someone suggest a model type to go for. I would just use it for the net, creating word/publisher/powerpoint/excel docs, and storing music and pics.

    Thanks for any advice.

Possible hard drive failure. Try to get someone who knows a bit about computers to check if the HDD is present in the bios.

have you tried going into fedora as root?

    username: root
    password: root

check up fedora password issues online, it should be easy enough to get into fedora. as for windows, well, considering you cant even get to the point of hitting f8 for options.

have you switched around the boot options in the bios? switching the cd drive to number one may jump past the need for the fedora password. worth a shot anyway.
