Question about Sky Satalite and Freesat

At the moment I have Sky installed in the house but am looking to change over to Freeview. I have two questions really,

    1. What in your opinion is the best Freeview receiver to buy (preferably HD)
    2. Is it hard to connect it to the existing Sky dish and will it have to be moved.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Remember you want Freesat not Freeview. You won't need to move your dish, just swap the boxes.

    Ya sorry, "Freesat"

Do you have any recommendations as to the best Freesat box

Nope. But I'm sure other people do. Or just read through the threads a bit. Or check out the retailers' websites from the shop list.

Prevailing wisdom tends to be that the Humax Foxsat HD is the best. There is a PVR version as well but it seems to be in short supply and a bit buggy. Good independent site http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/ has reviews and stuff.

As evilivor says, the current favourite is the Humax Freesat PVR, it costs about £300, but for that you do get to record in HD!

There is a new freesat box recently released from Metronic and current reviews seem to suggest that the picture quality, especially in SD, is better than the Humax. It retails for about £150 and can be bought from Maplins.

Personally, I have the Bush HD Box and find it excellent. That retails for £97 in Argos.

Just be careful if you're buying anything instore from Maplins in Ireland as they shaft us with the exchange rate - the Humax non-PVR was E229 last week in Dublin and it's £145 in the UK.

One of their staff members also has a nasty habit of referring customers to other satellite retailers to answer technical questions.

I should have specified Maplin in the UK. I am unsure if their Irish shops even sell the Metronic box.

I have the bush HD freesat box. Very good piece of kit. EPG for 7 days is a good thing. Find the upscaled SD picture miles better than what my sky box displayed.

At the moment the alba group that makes most of the freesat boxes under different brands (goodmans, grundig, bush) has not delivered to its customers since end november.

This has made them very hard to get, even the like of currys and argos in the UK cant get them.

Only negative thing about these freesat boxes is that there is no RCA output for audio. Ive got over it though with the use of a cheap scart adaptor that adapts down to RCA phono/SVHS

All the main UK channels including all the BBC's, all the Itv's, ch4 & ch4+1, five. BBC HD, ITVHD. you can tune the non freesat channels in when the box is put into non freesat mode. Its great now as i have a TM6900 which i use for non 28east satellites, so i can now record 1 HD channel while i watch another one!

Its just handy to have a full epg and the channels all 2gether instead of all over the shop like on a sky box.

It sets its self up once you put a UK postcode of your choice in. You can still have your sky box connected as it has a loop through at the back for the dish input.
