I recently bought an adapter from ebay that allows me to connect a device with composite video output into my laptop through USB.

Using a sony camcorder through AVout the quaility is very good.

What i would like to do it to stream this video over the internet so someone else can see it.

Skype is one option where i can set my "webcam" to be the USB device and the video streams though this however that requires making a "call" everytime i want to access the video and someone on both ends to initiate and answer the "call".

What i require is somethere where the data is constantly streaming and i can just type in a URL address or something similar and view the video.

    how tech savvy are you?

you could set up a streaming media server that would be broadcasting the stream continuosly, but you'd have to open up ports on your broadband router, and have either a fixed IP address or use one of those dynamic DNS web addresses.

so you'd need to get the server software setup, and then the network side of things sorted so you could actually see it from the internet.

It's been a while since I've done any of the above, maybe there's a much easier solution out there these days. But if I was doing it that'd be where I'd start.

    maybe google would help also.

edit: Real Media used to give a year trial of their "Helix" software. not sure if they still do:

There would be a fair few options for this, but I know that VLC can stream.

    Engadget has a guide here - http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/29/how-to-stream-almost-anything-using-vlc/

You'll need to utilise dyndns - http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ - or one of those sort of things unless you're lucky enough to have a static ip.

e: beaten for much of it by a couple of minutes...

There's a step by step method listed here using software called TinCam, but it's a little bit complicated so it might take some reading before you attempt it. (I've never tried this myself but it looks like it should work fairly well).

I have on the other hand used Qik. It's software that streams from the camera on your mobile direct to qik's website and even stores the clips to be watched later (ala youtube). I'm fairly sure that if that kind of software exists for mobile phones, there must be a similar website that offers such a service for PC webcams. Haven't come across any myself though.

Would a Slingbox not do the job?

Qik doesn't support Nokia or Symbian phones as far as I can see...
