Yeah, Málaga is a lot nicer than you might expect. Most people on package holidays only see the airport and the nasty high-rise buildings surrounding it and get a bad first impression of the place, but the city centre/old town is really lovely.
The cathedral and the Gibralfaro (old castle/fortress) on the hill are probably two of the main things to visit, but there's also the bullring, a Roman amphitheatre and the Picasso museum, not to mention the beaches, some nice shopping areas, great food and the nightlife.
I'd say 2 days, 3 max, should be enough to spend in Málaga.
The only problem is that during the summer flights there can be pretty expensive.
Sevilla is a fantastic city, you'll definitely enjoy it, but it does get reeeeeealllllly hot there in summer.

not a big fan myself, especially in the summer. it's very busy, full of louts, beaches are awful. would you be driving? cordoba is a lovely place to visit and if you have time, try and make it to Granada and visit the alhambra (one of the most amazing places on this planet)

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you that Granada and Córdoba are vastly superior to Málaga, but the OP did ask about Málaga. :)
