Self Employed - Entitled to Illness Benefit?

My dad is self employed and has been hit hard with influenza for the past 8-9 days. He has been out of work for all of last week, and it looks as if this week is a non-runner as well. He can be pretty lethargic when it comes to things like checking up on what he could be entitled to.

I had a look through welfare.ie and I couldn't find anything relating to this.

Is somebody who is self-employed entitled to claim illness benefit?

Self employed myself and aware that the tax your father pays will only cover him for the state pension and not unemployment or sick pay with the social welfare. Hope this helps.

Your father would have be a registered employer. Illness benefit is paid to individuals working for companies or to companies employing the individual. To cover himself for future illness's he would have to take out his own policy. :o Hope he feels better soon.

The company is in his name (obviously) and he employs a few people. Pays PRSI too as far as i'm aware. I sent an email to benefits@welfare.ie today with the same query so hopefully they'll get back soon enough.

They key thing here is what PRSI rate he pays. If its the S class (more than likely) then he won't be entitled to Illness benefit.

    Who pays PRSI S class:

Illness benefit you need 104 payments, but this doesn't state class
