Tescos in Lucan seemed to have all of their Lexmarks going for half price when I passed through earlier:

    X5650 - €64.99
    X3650 - €49.99
    X4650 - €84.99
Z1520 - €?? Sorry, the price ticket seemed to be missing from that shelf.

The reason is clear, they rape you on the price of new cartirdges and the build quality is rubbish.

Printers are the same as razors - cheap razors, expensive razor blades. That said generic cartridges and refill kits work for most models.

I've had two Lexmarks and they were both woeful. Do yourself a favour and get a Canon. The MP220 is 137 quid in Tescos, 60 in Argos, 39 sterling in the UK.

Have to agree with the above. Get a canon or epson, the ink is better value and build quality is a bit better.

I have a Lexmark X75, I only need it for occasional printing, scanning or photocopying but it's very poor quality.

Agree that they rape you on the cartridge costs, but to offer a counterpoint: we've a Lexmark P4350 all-in-one and it's perfect for 4x6" up to A4 photos. We also produced all our wedding invites and booklets on it without a bother.

It has admittedly been about 15+ years since I was in the market for having need of a printer myself rather than just using ones in work but are the Lexmark really that bad quality?

Ink is ink is ink and is expensive, and for the amount of printing I'd be doing wouldn't be that much of an issue, but some device that can do the scanning and printing would be handy now I'd not have free access to such devices anymore.

My local Tesco had a 'half-price' HP printer/scanner/copier at €49.99 reduced from €99.99, I took down the model number to research it at home as I need one, and found out €49.99 is more than it's being sold for at regular price in the US and UK and it's really poor quality in build and printing anyway

yeah, if you're printing anything @ home really, in order not to get ripped off you need to go lazer printer.

I have a brother wireless multifunction yoke -DCP-750CW - at home. The wireless bit is great as you can just plug it in wherever you want and print to it from a machine in the other room.

I get my ink from inkjet.ie and in the last 18 months or so have had to refill the 4 cartidges twice. At €15 or so for all 4 (in total, not each) I think I'm getting reasonable value. I don't print loads, but I would print something off most days.

My mother got a Lexmark a while back. It broke. Lexmark replaced it without issue - sending out a higher spec model and telling her to keep the old one. She is having great trouble finding inks for it that don't cost an arm and a leg. In fact, I think she is having great trouble finding inks for it at all.

By the way, the Lexmark guys said something along the lines of "Ah yeah, the paper feed on those models does pull more on the left than on the right, so paper does tend to get jammed." It's not exactly a ringing endorsement of their product. After ink transfer, paper feed is about as basic a function as you can get for a printer.

If you're one of the few that use linux check that the model is supported before you buy. I've found their linux drivers to be woeful. Had to buy a different printer.

i use a hp laserjet p1005, got it in argus for €100ish.
New toner replacements are €55 delivered in the post from http://www.inkmaestro.ie/ - very good service in my experience.

Always worth looking at http://www.trustedreviews.com/printers/ before you buy a printer, they run all the economy tests etc and work out price per page.

I use compatible cartridges on my Canon Pixma 3000.
    Costs ~3 euro for a set of 4 .
Cheaper still if I use bulk refill ink.
I would never ever buy a printer unless I knew I could get cheap compatibles or use a cheap refill kit on it.

Its a fine printer but not being made anymore,it was the last of the unchipped Canon printers.
The newer models are chipped and are more difficult/expensive to run.
I mostly buy the cartridges from SVP.co.uk

Also looking to replace my printer. My Dell one died, but it had problems pulling in paper since Day 1.
So looking for a copier/scanner/printer in one. Don't need to print photos. However, good value ink a real plus+
Was thinking of the HP Photosmart C4480. EUR65 in Powercity/EUR75 in Argos. Seems to have a good reviews on Amazon.
Can make it to Harvey Normans/PC World/Currys etc. so if anyone has spotted a good deal, please let me know!
    All feedback welcome!

Just a heads up that Dell printers are actually re-branded Lexmarks! I find Epson to be a good printer, and you can get cheap good quality compatible inks from an irish company Just Media, my printer takes 6 individual inks and I get 18 inks (3 sets of all colours) for around €50ish

I've a MP600 Canon printer. It has the annoying chips on the cartridges but it's dead easy to remove the chip from the old cartridge and put them on a new one. The printer complains that your cartridges should be empty but then it gives up forever. inkjet.ie do the 5 cartridges for less than €20 inc shipping. I'd recommend that one for a MultiFunction printer. It's a bit pricier and probably superceded by a newer model now but it's a great printer and cheap as hell to run (once you don't buy Canon branded inks).

Got one of these HP printers yesterday and i have no complaints, it prints much clearer than the Lexmark one i had.
