Hey guys. So a supplier of mine has some new stock, some nice Kingston triple-channell RAM, a LGA1366 Mobo..and the trio of Core i7 chips.

Is anyone in Ireland actually interested in purchasing one? Because I was thinking of building a few of the machines.

    Well?

Already have one and very happy with it. More than twice the performance of my previous Quad FX system in BOINC. Need to get a decent cooler for it though, the Intel supplied one is useless.

I didnt think the cooler was *too* bad...

I thought the method of attachment to the board was horribly fragile compared to the AMD style of a solid backing plate and collar. The Intel one just has 4 plastic spreading pins. There's also no grill around the fan, making me a tad paranoid about the horrible effects or a loose cable swinging into it.

How much did it set you back?

i plan on upgrading. not for some time but the idea of so many cores just makes my mind bubble. pitty few programs currently know how to use the cores.

though im sure it would make a great box for some vm's

About €1600 for the 965, board and 6 gigs of RAM. It eats half the electricity of the QuadFX and since I run it 24 hours a day at full load, it'll be saving me money instead after a year. Or at least that's the feeble justification for it that I tell myself.

Its pretty good value, in fairness. I mean, as was said before, what would use such power? That means really that its future proofed.

    Working grand for me.

the 920 didnt like being pushed to 3.2 on the stock cooler but it's running no probs @ 2.8 for the last 2 months.

There will be the more mainstream version of i7 with a different socket and less memory channels. You could hold out for those.

Yeah that's due out next autumn IIRC....
It's a heafty price to pay right now, if you're a jobless student. Like I am.

I gave up on the hardware arms race and changed OS, so no, I don't think I will need more power for quite some time.
