Both my kids are looking to travel on J1's this summer. One wants to go to the US - possibly Maryland or Florida and the other to Canada (possibly Montreal). Just wondering if anyone has any recent(ish!) experience of this, or indeed any alternative places that would be better to head for i terms of securing some work?

For Canada, the easiest place to find a job would be Alberta. Ottawa may be ok as well and it's pretty close to Montreal.

Can't offer any advice on America though, sorry.

Just to let you know, the Canadian Visa is very different to the J1. Have a google and you'll find a bit of info on it. I used Usit for mine in 2007 and went to Calgary in Alberta. As it happened, I had a house arranged through a rugby club before I got there. I got a job very easily as there was a healthy economy there at the time. Not sure if this is still the case, but I haven't heard any bad reports.

The visa application opens some time soon I think (mine was in early feb afaik) and any people who applied after midday on this day were not immediately accepted, but put on a waiting list. It is apparently much more limited than the J1 so if he wants to go, make sure he applies on the day application opens.

The Canada visa's are already open! the student '09 opened in November, and the u/35 '09 opened in December....
OP you'll find info here: http://canada.usit.ie/

Ah my mistake. Seems to be still loads of places available. I definitely remember the application closing very quickly and subsequent applicants being placed on a waiting list.

Calgary is a great city though. Full of cowboys, prairie land on one side and rocky mountains on the other.

Loads of jobs in vancouver last year anyways. Better exchange rate than the states as well versus the euro.

maryland and florida are certainly not the typical j1 destinations.for florida id say st petersburg or clearwater beach, they are both big resorts and im sure would have a lot of seasonal work.theres hundreds of beach resorts in florida though so its really down to where they want to be.as for maryland, never been, never heard of anyone doing the j1 there and the main city baltimore is considered quiet dangerous with a big drug problem and plenty of "ghettos." i cant imagone them meeting many other j1ers in either tbh.that might not bother them but for me a big part was meetin other people, going to houseparties etc.

i did my j1 in boston-loved it, visited mates in san diego who loved their time there too.id recommend either.the other big j1 spots in recent years have been new york, montauk and the hamptons, chicago, san fran, hawaii and myrtle beach.
