Vista Keyboard

I have Vista Home basic 32 bit and a PS/2 keyboard with a PS/2 to USB adaptor attached. The computer won't recognise the keyboard and always comes up as "keyboard error" when booting. I have tried another keyboard and the same thing happens.

Is it a case that this just won't work and a USB keyboard will have to be used?
