Hi, hope someone can help. When I try to connect to the internet on my home computer the following is displayed:
"Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime Library
    Program: C:/Program Files/internet Exporer/iexplore.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corruped this program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
    OK "
Anyone know what this means and how can I correct it?

from what ive read it seems to be a problem with plug-ins installed onto the pc. remove them and you should be fine

It means Internet Explorer is fecked. Try this.
Easier is to download another browser, Firefox or Opera or whatnot, at work and put it on a USB stick. Bring home and install.
You can then use that browser to find the latest version of IE and re-install it.

Would it not be possible to go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and use the Uninstall option on Internet Explorer? Doing this will bring up a repair option which might be able to fix your installation of IE.

Still no joy guys. I uninstalled Internet Explorer as Soundman suggested but it did not give me the repair option. How can I reinstall IE?
Also if I install something like Norton Security (have none at the moment) do you think this might fix the problem?
Am calling into PC World this afternoon to see if they can help but anyone got any suggestions in the meantime?

I would go with this suggestion here. Unless you need IE for some specific purpose, it would be a safer browse with either Firefox or Opera.

I would also go with the option of downloading firefox and installing that on your computer and then downloading a newer version of IE after that as it will be a lot cheaper then bringing it to PC world

Thanks guys. I am a complete novice so don't really know what I am at. I do not have a USB stick, could I download Firefox or Opera onto a disk at work and install it that way?

You mean a CD? Yes, that would work. Just copy the .exe file that you download onto it.

Only if you think you contracted a computer virus by visiting dodgy websites. Anyway the damage is done.

Do you have your Windows CD or a means to backup your files, photos and documents?

Thanks for the replys guys. I dowloaded Firefox, ran it and that got me connected. Only problem now is that I have no sound on Youtube. I had to install Adobe Flash Player but still have no sound. Any suggestions on how to get the sound back?

Its starting to sound like my old Windows 95 machine. One day I leave the Cd tray open for 2 minutes and the PC dies: non-bootable. Comes back from shop - mess. Reinstall sound drivers == lose mouse drivers. In the end, I bricked the machine :)

    Here:

HijackThis™ is a free utility that generates an in depth report of registry and file settings from your computer.

    Download :
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US … nstall.exe

    Usage :
This is how HijackThis looks when first opened:

    HJT_Start.png

Click the button labeled Do a system scan and save a logfile.

    save_hijackthis.png

HijackThis will quickly scan your system, and then open two new windows. The results of the HijackThis scan, and hijackthis.log in Notepad. Select all from Notepad and copy and paste it into your thread (ie. Here. We need to read it)

Also run this and do the same:

Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

    Download : http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ … plorer.zip

    Usage :

Run, click File menu, Save As... Save the file to a place you can find it, open up with a Notepad or any text editor/viewer you like. Copy the contents and paste it into your thread.
