    Hello,

I'm an old fan of 40k and used to play about 15 years ago, maybe more as i started out with GW's space hulk.
Anywho im looking to start again and am keen on collecting an Imperial guard army, however i did not realise how expensive it all is , (i'm not being cheap just the economic downturn and all).

I was just wondering is there a cheaper option to collecting minatures and some healthy advice as the do's and dont's in WH40K gaming.

    Thanks

You could possibly buy the codex and then buy other manufacturers models. Or try and find an army on ebay. Though that's not that much cheaper really.

It's definitely not a cheap hobby, but it can be reasonable value considering how much time you can spend on it, for how much it costs.

If money is tight then I don't know that I could recommend playing 40K, and Imperial Guard requires a lot of models.

Who are you playing with? If it's friends, then possibly buy the codex and then proxy models, or printed out tokens. Personally, I would have no problem playing against someone with a completely proxied army as long as everything was clearly distinguishable, and marked. Some people would have a problem with that though, so YMMV.

You wouldn't be able to play in any tournaments, or in your local gaming store that way though.

I know there are cheaper manufacturers of trooper models than GW, maybe that's a way to go. Still won't be that cheap.

I'd also suggest asking on dakkadakka.com, there's a much higher footfall there, and they might have some helpful suggestions.

There's a ton of rumors about a new guard codex coming out around May (thought it was March :( ). With it will come sets of plastic stormtroopers/cadian's etc, HQ choices like the marines got (HQ's with army specific abilities) and tank squads. I thought it was going to be around March :/ (rumours from bell of lost souls)

Waiting for the new releases may be a cheaper option but it means a 5 month wait and that's IF the rumours of the relase date are true.

If you want to get started now generally the sets are pretty good value for money. For example, the Cadian battleforce is about 48 sterling, getting everything seperate would cost around 61 sterling from gamesworkshop. The Cachian set comes with two sentinels instead of a Leman Russ and some plastic trees! The rest is mostly the same I think.

The Imperial Guard Emperors Fist Tank Company would be the same but for tanks. 10 Tanks for £150 instead of £250, it's a big commitment though! Saves the wallet a little though :)

Unfortunately you've picked an army that is simply an expensive one to build, due to the low points cost per model, and hence the higher overall number of models you'll end up buying.

Have you considered playing a different army, one that doesn't require such large numbers of models?

eBay and Bartertown might let you pick up stuff cheap, but there's no guarantee of it.

One of the best things to do is find a gaming club in your area and wander along for some face to face advice.
You should be able to find someone who'll help you with picking an army that you'll enjoy painting and playing.

ment to add more there, and talk to some of the staff there.
Looking at the other threads they seem to be the most resonable. And perhaps can shed some hands on light to prices etc.

you could search the adverts.ie boards for warhammer items. some people were selling theirs off recently. I spent about 450euro this weekend but got lots of stuff (see below). If you're lucky you can pick some really nice bargains. Also car-boot sales are a good place to hunt as well. Parents clearing space tend to sell these off way cheaper than they are actually worth (if you're lucky you might find something, if not at least its a day out!), or in newbridge there Art and Hobby, they give you 20euro voucher when you spend 120euro (1stamp for every 20euro spend). So get 140euros worth of stuff for 120euro. not much of a saving but it helps!
