hey just wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences in this new club "the kings" in ennis...regularly play in fitzpatrick's but ventured in to play a couple of tournaments in this new club to see what the action was like....found that the tournaments were very badly run and that management were very ignorant towards customers..just wondering if anyone else has had a similar or WORSE experience...

    What was your bad experience?

I've only played there a couple of times and found it very well run although the numbers were low, they could do with advertising across the county.

Thank you funnyname. We have made a bit of a push with our advertising and are now in the Clare Champion each week. We also advertise on our website thekings.ie
Numbers have started to pick up and it shows with our tournament last Friday (9th Jan) seating 26 players, our tournament last Sunday (11th Jan) seating 22 players 4 of which were new and our Clare Poker Championship League now has just over 80 entries.
I would invite poker 546 to PM me and explain his/her bad experience to me instead of making a statement on boards with no explanation. We encourage all members to come forward with any queries or problems they may have. It is a members club and members opinions and feedback is important to us.

I approached the door one night after work, had a total of two pints in the downstairs pub.

I was told that i needed to go away and have a burger or else i was not alowed to play poker tonight bud, (and this is not an isolated case).

I didn't know what to think,

    1. "was this a jibe at my large exterior?"

    or

    2. "or was this guy actually being serious?"

Apologies Shergar but drunk members had become a nuisance to our poker game which was not acceptable. Strict measures are taken to keep drunk members out and spoiling our game. Apologies if you got mistaken but nobody is judged on their exterior. We aim to protect our game and protect players who are not in good frame of mind to gamble.

there is one particualr member that is constantly drunk, i know the quy for 4-5 years and i dont think i have ever seen the quy sober and he is well in his late 40's.

my advise that they should pay more attention to the guys who are roaring their heads off drunk out of there mind and are so OBVIOUSLY DRUNK and not the guy who comes up for a game after work.

i havent been in there since it happened and i know that it wont change no matter what they say cos i heard it all before,

and as for the doorman who said that i needed to go away and have a burger, i know people on life support that show more intellgence than him

You make a statement as above which is fully understandable but I then see that you open at midnight on Saturday, is there a poker bus due in town at that time or are you actually aiming to get the few sober ones not falling into the nightclub

No there's no bus but we do expect members to be in a good state at that hour. Not everyone does the dog on it.

I'm a member in the club, I have to say that I've never had reason for complaint, well I had a couple of queries about some rulings but they were dealt with timely and politely, when I brought up a concern about a previous visit, again it was dealt with politely and I was assured that it wouldn't happen again (it hasn't).

In regards to people coming in drunk, there seemed to be a problem with people coming in well on it and playing ruining the game for everyone, I would say that there's a number of people that were turned off because of it and won't be back, I like the way they ask people if they're ok, if you think that they shouldn't have turned you away after you had a few pints, would you prefer they let you play when you didn't know what you were doing and then you lost a good chunk of change?

I have no affiliation to the club, but I have to say of the cards clubs/casinos I've been to it's 1 of the best I've been in and has to be the most friendliest, I feel like Norm when I go in with everyone welcoming me :)

Keep up the good work lads and lady :)

You make good, valid points here clareman...however the thing that gets me is that i can go in there howling to the moon and pissing all over the floor if im blowing a wad of cash playing blackjack or roulette. This doesn't seem to be any problem whatsoever, but if ive had a few pints and i'm playing a cash game having a bit of craic I'll be asked to leave.

Not meaning to get into a debate on this 1, but I've seen people asked to step away from the games before cause they had a couple of pints too many, this was for both blackjack and roulette. In regards to having the bit of craic, there is a fine line between someone who's had a few pints having the craic and being annoying, it's very difficult to police but I think the people in charge are trying

Would it be fair to say though that this is usually because they are being too loud as opposed for the protection of the players? Must admit Ive noticed far more people asked to leave the poker table than the roulette/blackjack.

I was playing blackjack and myself and another player were playing as "properly" as you can play, then some drunk lad came in and started playing, when it was clear he didn't have a clue he was asked (politely I must add) to take a break for a while.

though I doubt that ever actually happened, what the hell are you on about...."proper" blackjack are you a professional blackjack player or something...

It's amazing when the thread starts going away from the OP he then starts to disbelieve others stories. Why should anyone believe your tale of woe then.

You don't have to be a professional to play "proper" blackjack same as you don't have to be a professional to play "proper" Hold Em & each game has it own skill levels. If you think it's all luck please come play at my table anytime.

Strikes me this club are making every effort to run a decent club & they are to be admired for that. I don't want to get into the debate about allowing drunks to donk away their possibly hard earned cash but IMO drink & poker do not mix well

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,041 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Cards and drink don't mix but get on very well together. I wouldn't consider myself a good blackjack player by any streach of the imagination, but I would know what to do when the dealer is showing a 7 and I have 18 and stuff like that, having a drunk come in, be on 18 and look for another card, stuff like that.

I would agree with kakak1, they are trying to make the place a good place to play cards, I like it there, I'm delighted that the numbers are improving and I look forward to representing them in the IO after I win the league

Dont get brought away from the argument that people have been asked to leave far too frequently and here are two simple issues that they should be focusing on

(on the basis that punters are drunk)

    1. do not let them in the door, this should be sorted before they enter the building.

    2. if they make their way upstairs, DONT GIVE THEM CASH CHIPS, because they cant use real money.

---- and have a strict rule and reigime for all game's, then everyone will understand.

"SO ITS OK TO BLOW WHAT YOU HAVE ON OUR TABLE GAMES BUT LOOK FUNNY AT SOME ONE WHILE YOUR PLAYING CARDS AND ITS
CAN I HAVE A WORD OUTSIDE BUD!!.

I was up there only last week and i saw the same treatment and until i hear different i'll be sitting in the fitz where its ok to have..
2 PINTS ASKED TO AND ENTER THIS PALACE OF SOBERITY

    ....................................................................................................

I'm a complete outsider here as I live in Cavan and while I'm originally from Clare I have never played in this club, I do have a weeks holiday planned in the Banner County this Summer and have already informed the missus that I will be spending at least two full nights playing in this club.
I think the bigger picture has to be looked at here, I understand your disgruntlement at being asked to leave a club or being refused entry because the managent or whoever deemed you were to drunk to play but this is for your own sake as much as for any other players on the premises. Why not just go to the club some evening without drink on you, introduce yourself as a member and get to know the staff etc. Then on the odd night when you've had a couple of pints downstairs and head up to play there will be no problem as you are now a regular and they know you.
Don't give up on what seems to me to be a very professionally run premises because the doorman was trying to do his job. Good card clubs are not to be found on every street corner. Give it another go is my suggestion...

Well said Wolf. Let me know when your coming down and I'll donate a few chips, you'll have to earn them though :)

apologies for straying off topic here but i just hate when people start crying that someone else's poor blackjack play is costing them money...if you're lucky enough to come across an empty blackjack table then you can play heads up with the dealer until another punter comes along but when your playing at a full table you just have to play the cards your dealt and not worry whether the drunken anchor is going to hit his 18...blackjack is purely a gambler's game anyway so gamble it up and stop crying..
