JSA - how long of a wait between applying, and receiving?

I'm just wondering how long is the average wait time between applying for the JSA, and receiving correspondence/ the next step of the process?

I applied for the JSA on Dec 4th, all forms were filled in, and I was told by the lady in the SW Office that I would receive a letter in he post about my claim in "a few weeks".

This Thursday will be 6 weeks since I applied. Taking into account about a week off for Christmas, should I be expecting to hear back soon? How long is the general timeframe after applying?

also, I was under the impression that what I would be receiving in the post would be a letter along the lines of "your claim has been accepted, you will be paid X a week, go to your post office from Xth January onwards", or something like that. is this what will happen?

i've looked through other threads and some people have mentioned means test interviews, and people coming to your house. does this actually happen? will it tell me to be home on a certain date to have an interview or something?

and who should I get on to to follow up the status of my claim? the local SW Office phone is constantly engaged, and I'm not sure if they'd even know about the status any way? should I ring some Welfare head office and try find out?

ultimately I just want to know how long until I find out when/if I will be getting JSA, as my savings are running very low at the moment...

JUST THOUGHT WITH THE SURGE IN UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE BACKLOGS AND WAITING TIME FOR MEANS TESTS THE WELFARE OFFICES ARE UNDER STAFFED WOULDNT IT CREATE JOB OPPURTUNITIES IN THE WELFARE OFFICES.......JUST A THOUGHT

I was told last week by the social welfare person that the wait was 4 or 5 weeks.
Tbh, i think he was being nice to me and the wait is really 6 - 8 weeks.
If you don't receive the letter after week 8 just go in, queue and tell them you've been waiting 8 weeks and that it's an emergency, you've no money to survuve. They wont be long sorting you out then i would imagine.

Edit: On your other matter, i wasn't means tested or anything. Just handed him my form etc and he said 'yeah thats all grand, expect a letter from us in 4/5 weeks with details of PO collection'.
I filled in that GWS19 form then when i went home (the one with evidence of proof of looking for work). That was it.

that's great, thanks. it's been just over 7 weeks now, so i'll leave it until next week and then go down and try find out if i can get any update on the status.

    that's very odd.
i was talking to a friend of a friend the other day, and he applied at the end of November, about a week before me, and his came through in 4 weeks.
maybe they just put them all in a big box as they come in, and pick out applications at random

yes, surely they could take on a certain number of people on (eg) 2 month contracts as clerical officers to help deal with the backlog.

then again, it's probably easier leaving people waiting 2 months and backdating them 200 a week, than taking them on for 400 a week during that time and clearing out the backlog.

    :D That's quite possible!

Going into your SWLO is unlikely to speed up your claim. Best bet is to go to your CWO.
