Just back from a week in Alpe D'huez and i'm already thinking about the next trip. my mates and I are considering the US of A for our next ski trip.

So has any folks got experience of skiing in the USA?

    Where did you go?
What did you think of it?
What are the things to consider when going skiing in the states?
    good/bad points?

From browsing the web, Vail and Beckenridge seem the most popular

Id also be interested in hearing peoples thoughts.

Im planning on going skiing in the US next xmas but ive been advised that the nightlife isnt anything like europe. My cousin came back from the US,they were skiing or staying in a place called lincoln. They didnt think much of the night life, just a few restaurants and not much in the way of pubs/night clubs.

Anyone been that can advise on a good resort with good nightlife or any night life at all?Id be more interested in the east of the US as colorado is a few hours extra on a place.

thinking about heading to colorado next year in late Jan, early Feb.

any advice on where to go?

vail & aspen are probably super expensive.

copper mountain & winter park look good though

From my own mates experience's the US is a bit far ,too long of a flight and transfer compared with a 2 hour hop to the european resorts.
Ive heard with the exception of whistler that many of the north american resorts dont compare to teh european resorts for apres ski. Some resorts merely have diner/restaurants type of places.
I cant speak personally as ive always favoured european resorts but what ive heard from friends is the above

I have been to Squaw Valley in Tahoe and the skiing was ok - not a massive place. I must agree with the above comments - the place was dead after about 8pm! A few people milling around an ice cream shop was all the life there was in the small town.

I have also been to Canada skiing for a week to Banff/LL/Sunshine as all three areas are linked on the ski pass. We had a car so I cant say how good the public transport links were but all the ski areas were quite a way from the town. Again although Canada was a little more lively it really is nothing like European skiing.

It tends to be a bit more family orientated than some of the more party places in Europe.

Also its a long aul flight for a week. If you are heading over to the west side then its a good 10 hour flight and I found I was waking up at 4/5am so by the time 2pm/3pm came after lunch I was whacked out after skiing all day.

If you were going for 2 weeks then this would obviously sort itself out by the end of week one.

For the scenery the US and Canada are really amazing but unless I was planning a 10 or 14 day ski holiday I would not go across the atlantic again for my one week ski holiday.

I have yet to find anywhere that compares to the Austrian apres!
