Not sure if this is the right board so feel free to move it.

My friend is sending me money he owes me. He is based in Australia and instead of sending a cheque in the post I was thinking that he could transfer the funds to my PayPal account. I have a personal account and have never used it to receive funds before. Is it possible for me to receive the money through PayPal?

Might not work. There are severe limits on Personal accounts. In the past, it wasn't possible to receive money send from a credit card, only from bank account or Paypal funds. Not sure now.

    Try it and see.

You could try it, can't do any harm. You might not be allowed to receive the funds, not only due to your account but also the nature of the payment. You have never received a payment before and your first one is from Australia where no sale is made, kind of looks dodgy to PayPals systems and it may not be allowed through to your account.

That being said theres nothing to lose from trying it, if you cant get the money it will go back to your friend.

I think you can upgrade account for free and easily enough too...But PayPal do take a commission (it's just smaller on the higher account levels). I'm on Premier...PayPal says you can upgrade at any time.

OP get your friend to send it via western union money transfer, the commission isn't too expensive. More importantly it's safe and the transaction goes thru in 15 mins. Post Offices are western union agents so it's easy to collect your cash.
