Should I crossfire my 4870 on a 1600x1200 resolution or can the 4870 512mb handle it?

If I was to sell my intel extreme x48 board+ Q9450 and a zelman cooler how much would they be worth.

You'd be better off selling the 4870 and just buying a higher end graphics card imho. SLI and Crossfire just aren't worth it for the limited performance increase they give and they'll sap a lot of power (you may need to buy a new power supply as well as a motherboard). The HD4870X2 may be what you're after. Pricey, but not as pricey as replacing your motherboard and getting another card, and as far as I know it outperforms two HD4870s in crossfire. It's a big card though, so bear that in mind.

No idea how much 2nd hand gear goes for, so I can't help you there.

I have the same card, albeit it the 1Gb version, and I play games no problem at 1680x1050 with a 3ghz dual core and 2gb of ram.

You should be fine with one card.

The difference in memory makes a huge difference, play a game at 1600x1200 that spills over 512mb usage and the difference in framerate could be up to 300-400%+ compared to the same model with more memory.

I have a 1GB 4870 and I game at 1920x1200, the 512mb version dies horribly at that resolution in games (with maxed textures, etc, obviously) - and I mean horribly. 1600x1200 is the border for which I'd consider a 1gb variant, and I definitely wouldn't crossfire 512mb cards if playing the latest and greatest - I'd sell up and get a GTX260/1GB 4870/GTX280 or similar
