HTPC on Athlon 64 FX-51 / 1GB Ram

Hey, I want to use an Athlon FX-51 machine with a gig of ram as a PC I can leave beside the telly and stream and play HD movies from my network on.

I need a really cheap + quiet AGP / PCI card with TV out that will help the processor with decoding HD stuff and software (Any platform, can install new OS) that'll work fairly easy out of the box.

I don't suppose you folks could point me in the right direction?

    AGP or PCI? No PCI-e?

I'm sure a FX-51 motherboards have PCI-express. If so this is what you want.

Sure you can get variants of the Radeon HD for 10-15 euro's less but the above has HDMI-out physically on the graphics card, also silent. With cheaper one's you've need to buy a DVI to HDMI adaptor, and it has to be a specific one as well, which would cost you 10-15euro.

The Radeon HD has an integrated audio controller (5.1) too so it sends both the video and audio out the HDMI slot.

If your restricted to AGP or plain PCI your not going to find anything cheap unless it's second hand I'd say. Some Radeon HD variants have been released in AGP, also the X1000 series which supports hardware h.264 decoding is available in AGP.

Here's a list of Nvidia cards which support hardware h.246 decoding

Not at the same time though, right ? Is it either, or ?

Been a while since I looked into anything, but I thought there were limited cards that could do audio/video via HDMI at the same time.

Yeah audio and video out the HDMI interface, at the same time. Wouldn't be much use otherwise :pac:

As far as I can tell all Radeon HDs have this feature. Not sure about what Nvidia have to offer.

Hey, just to clarify, I already have everything bar the card, and the mainboard is AGP so I'm committed to an AGP card!
I'll have a look see if that one has an AGP equivalent though.

What kind of inputs does your TV have on the back?

TV has s-video, Scart, and composite (is SDTV) but it won't be around for long, and I'll want to be playing HD content (albeit at SD resolution) because HD is the format I'll have it in.
