I'm downloading the windows 7 beta and I want to stick it on my 4211. Vista drivers should work fine with windows 7 so I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there are vista drivers for the 4211 (I imagine there is) and if so can you post a link.
    Cheers. :)

Probably the installation process and Windows Update will give you most of what you need. I had everything working from the get-go, except fingerprint and ahci.

Cheers, will give that a shot. Can I just mount this in daemon tools and install it that way without a proper dvd drive?

I highly doubt it...but if its possible, im sure you'll get it working and prove me wrong :)

Edit- Its possible. Involves copying the disk image onto a new partion, and manually hacking your bootmanager etc to direct them there. Seems a little fiddly but I reckon you'd sort it. Vista link here:

i'd say you figure the XP equivalent out with a bit of googling/headscratching..

At least you have faith in me. :) Hopefully I can do it that way, it would save me having to borrow an external dvd drive. How long did it take you to get from the start of the installation to the stage where you able to boot into windows?

About 3/4 hour. But my drive was working in ATA mode, so it should have been a little quicker.

-Edit. Seems like it's pretty easy to install via a USB stick also (if your device supports booting from USB).

Hmm, I might do it tonight so if it only takes about an hour. The ISO should be fully downloaded in 30 minutes.

I also found this which looks a little less fiddly.

It seems like you can do it even simpler/cruder if you want, copy the files onto a USB drive and run the setup.exe file from within XP. 2 steps :pac:

If that's true, they are really making win7 easy/accessible.

I already did this, and it started installing right there,is there anyway to set it to a dual boot function as it is only a beta?

Running beta on my advent as i type!, i just created a 30Gb partition and installed it to that using the setup.exe, was very easy. And as for drivers win 7 found most of them except wireless drivers which i had to do a bit of searching around for, but eventually i found them hidden on the realtek site.

I did the same. I didn't think it would work but it did which is great. Made the installation a piece of piss. As for the wireless drivers I had the same problem. Windows update found them for me in a few seconds. Very happy with that. The amount of pain drivers have caused me on old xp computers is un-believeable, this seems to bring an end to that which is great.

I haven't used vista much but one thing that always annoyed me was UAC, that is no longer the case. It's only bugged me when a program is being installed which I don't mind and it doesn't do that stupid crap where it disables the whole computer until you decide. Gonna leave UAC like this.

One great feature is you can move things around on the task bar. Really like that. :) The install was pretty quick as well, only about a half an hour.

Mine was the same...the only trouble with my machine is that i've managed to bork my XP install, it was before i installed 7 btw. So now, win 7 is the only OS that's fully functional on my advent ARGH!!!!!, i'm starting to wish i hadn't deleted that recovery partition!
I could fix it...but im well too lazy and win 7 is a win for me so i'm just not bothered.

I still have the recovery partition on the hard drive that came with my 4211. If you want I could burn you off a copy of the recovery cd? You will have to get an external dvd drive though.

I might remove the xp install all toghether off this. Windows 7 seems stable enough and I doubt I'll be using it much.

Cheers for the offer, but there in lies the problem, i dont have an external dvd drive! I'm going to have to order one at some stage for handiness sake! Windows 7 will do me for the next few months anyway!

windows 7 installed on a 20 gig partition... I over wrote my boot manager with a new one from Easybcd so lost the tech guys one... but no bother.. just setup tech guys again on the new boot screen.. I used the xp drivers from the xp partition.. running in compatibility mode for xp service pack 2.. and all works fine...

and I've put win 7 on my hp dv6000 which was running vista home ulitimate (can't remember now) I went the upgrade route and simply went right over my vista partition... took ages over 6 hours for the update to run.. because of all the programs and files it had to port over... now it's running like a dream..

also stuck it on an old dell Inspiron 1501 with a sempron 1.8 and 512 meg of ram.. able to run the full aero and everything... faster than the windows basic that was on it.. could do with more ram though... so ordered another 1gb stick from Elara..

I'm gonna try it on an old dell dual core 512 meg of ram later to see what results I get...

When windows 7 does eventually come out.. I will be buying it for.. because it's that good..

    HP Dv6000
    Advent 4211c
    Advent 4213
    Inspiron 1501
    Dell Dual Core...

Microsoft has finally released or will be releasing soon.. the best OP system In my opinion..

I still have to run an xp partition somewhere.. because of Vista's or windows 7 lack of support for Aspi drivers.. for burning some of my old karaoke discs.. with CDRwin..

Remember the release is about a year away. It could change a lot between now and then. Hopefully Microsoft keep it as nippy as it is or make it even nippyer :). Like I said in another thread, this is as fast, if not faster than my nlited xp install. Very impressed with it.

Try disabling any antivirus, i've heard it can cause issues.
