Will any insurer cover a 21 year old on a Nissan 350Z? I was thinking maybe someone like XS Direct but I'm not sure?

Far as I know with XS direct you have to be above 24 or 25. Have you tried their site? linky

I suppose you could try to get Trade insurance. Not many insurance companies will want to insure you on it, as you know. Try Britton.

Never heard of this XS Direct. Apart from a high excess of €1000, what other drawback are there ?

I did a quote for a 1.6 and it gave me €1600 yet for a 3.0 the quote would be only €1700. What the hell ?

    1k? The excess is 4k (unless you're a woman, in which case it's 2k)

You have the option to reduce it to 1k which increases your premium. The figures I'm quoting are with the reduced premium.

best bet is to go with a broker to be honest. they would know where to get cover for you. Insure.ie is Mike Murphy brokers so try them.

Buy yourself a piece of $hit car for a couple of hundred, get insured on that, put the 350Z in a females name that you know and insure her and you can then drive it 3rd party, will work out cheapest once you don't write it off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Yeah you can get it alright. There's a guy with a beauty of one, modded straight import from Japan he's had since he was 19. Brings it to all sorts of car shows (and it wins every one! :D)

No offence intended, but for a 21 year old in a 350Z that's a big if.

I agree. Unless you can get some sort of trade insurance you're going to pay a small fortune to insure it, that is if you can find someone that will take your business.

I've just got a Nissan 350gt and am with xsdirect for 1,750 for the year but will be changing over to 123.ie for 1,200 next week hopefully. (24, 3yrs ncb)

...you need to read the small print........insurance co's changed the DOV clause years ago to cover Driving Other Vehicles so long as the the other vehicle is covered by IT's owner............Insurance co's closed that loophole years ago iirc........oh, and how'll you tax/NCT it without insuring it......??

Forget about online quotes, they are only set up to quote on regular run of the mill cars by low risk individuals. The OP or the car he wants to insure do not fall into these brackets.

A 21 year old insuring a performance car is going to be tough, OP needs to contact a broker who specialises in this. Someone like St Paul's, etc. Whoever quotes you it will not be cheap.

The only route I can think of is through Quinn Direct. Start out by insuring a much blander car for a few weeks (mothers, fathers, whatever), in your own name. Few weeks later give them a call telling them you've changed car, *you've already bought it*, *it's sitting in your drive* and you're wondering how much they'll be charging you for the change.
I'm yet to have been refused a quote this way, all the way up to a Boxter S, and I'm only 20. I think they were asking for ~2.2k for the Boxter S, just as a point of reference...

I know Quinn don't offer a very good level of cover, but it seems better than going with XS Direct to me.

How many years ncb do you have and how long have you been driving?
For that car, that's a savagely cheap quote.

St. Paul Travelers are insurers though, not Brokers. A common misconception.

These Guys are supposed to be good for performance cars. I got a fairly cheap quote from them when I was shopping for insurance on the M3.

Try 123.ie They seem to be the cheapest around. I was paying 1400 as a name driver on my car (got my ma to get insured on it and I went name driver!) and I just got a quote off them for 1200 on my own policy for fully comp. Plus they offer 24hr breakdown assist with all their fully comp policies. Well worth a look and you'll get a quote straight away on their site. Good Luck.

Of course, but possibly not as "wise" as someone over 25.

I was paying 1600 on a 350Z when I was 27. In fairness premiums have come down a lot since then. I was with St Paul Travellers through Glennons brokers. They were the only ones that would quote me at the time, and that was with a full NCB

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 407 ✭✭Ronanom

    I just got a quote of 1,180 for TPFT on a Nissan Skyline 350gt with 123.ie. I'm 24 with 3 years ncb.

I dont think thats true, I know of a few people and have seen people mention it here as well who have rang the their insurance company and they were told the other car does not have to be covered by any other insurance once they dont own the car and have the owners permission they were told they were covered.

On the topic of insurance I have a friend who has been insuring a 350 bhp 200sx with all mods declared for around 2000 euro since he was 22 and he had only 1 years no claims when he first insured it, of course there is a big difference in the value of the cars.

Or just put her on as the main driver on the policy?!

No point registering a car to someone else for 3rd party cover when you'll have more cover as a named driver.

Three years NCB, and driving the same.
Just thinking though, it might have only been the 2.5 litre Boxter, not the S...
    Still pretty cheap, age considered...
