Hi all, has anyone gone down the road of Bonded Bead and Mineral Wool blown in insulation ? Would you recommend it? It seems like a fast job and reasonably priced but would you end up slabbing the internal walls also? Any suggestions welcome.

    Regards,
    Dan.

Not sure of the question. Are you suggesting using both materials, together in the same cavity?

There are quite a few threads on retro-fit cavity insulation. IMO its fine for retro-fit in rendered buildings.

Depending on u-value of cavity insulation used, you may also need to dry-line, to meet current Regs in a new build.

Dano from calcuations I have done for some projects, the bead with a resistance of 0.33 will not quite comply on its own, unless you increase the cavity to 110mm or dryline with 38.5mm thermal board (25mm insulation.) The blown wool has a poorer r value and so will not comply on a new build on its own unless you increase the cavity to I think 130mm (from memory of manufacturers data sheet) or leave at 100mm and dryline as above. Both are fine of course for an existing building. You haven't siad is it a new or existing building you are dealing with.

Excuse my ignorance but is damp not an issue if you completely fill the cavity.

If not, surely bead insulation would be standard instead of insulation boards which are not always installed correctly.

It can be particurarly with brick faced buildings, make sure any system you are thinking of using has an irish agrement cert. A lot of people are using it at the moment in conjunction with drylining as it is cheaper than baord insulation which as you say is often not installed correctly. In new builds it is installed from the inside, no holes in the external leaf for moisture to exploit!!

Hi all, just to clarify it's for a new build and I was a little concerned at the U-value of 0.33 W/m2K so that made me think of the internal slabbing. I had just recently heard a builder raving about how good this stuff was so it got me thinking. Also I meant bead or mineral wool not a combination of both (sorry about the confusion), there seems to be many combinations and ways of going about insulating it becomes a bit of a headache. I'm looking to clear and level the site about March so really need to get my ass in gear and be definite about my direction with this. AlsoI'll be going direct labour so hopefully all to my spec. BTW has anyone gone for 9" joists and therefore 9" attic insulation.
