Last summer I worked as an RA for ctyi - absolutely amazing, best summer job you'll ever have I think. Now time has arrived to start thinking about jobs for next summer... I'd love to do something along the same lines but you can only be an RA once... does anyone know of anything? I'm looking for something along different lines to the typical j1 summer...

    any ideas?

yup... I considered that... but like you said, it's not half as fun plus the thing about that is the necessity to find your own accommodation.. we're looking for something residential...

I saw something about Camp Counselors at American summer camps, they looks for people from overseas, a quick google search will get it for you.

Its residential, I'd say the pay isnt exactly amazing but enjoyable none the less.

Anyone know what the story is with civil service jobs?

What does RA stand for? If you're just looking for a kind of summer camp-y job thing then there's any number of language based ones in Ireland and abroad, some of them even based in the same centres as CTYI. If you're looking specifically for the CTYI style smart kid camp I'm not really sure what else there is...

Got to say I wouldn't mind a job like that some summer, it's really just a matter of fitting it in I guess... Hoping to get an internship thingy this summer...

Yup...we've applied for cty America but we're keeping our options open because we've heard that they usually prefer to give jobs to Americans - something about visas being hard to organise...

Residential programs for cty only take place in dublin, everything else is day classes..

Language camp sounds awesome...will check it out!

to clarify on the language camps thing, there's camps for people learning english (usually spanish or italian kids) and there's camps for irish kids learning other languages (you have your gaeltachts, and your ELCs, EuroLanguage Colleges).

A friend of mine did one of the english ones in DCU last summer, got a place to stay + food + €300 per week. He said the only downside was having to give up most of your time and difficulty in getting the weekend off.

If your looking for money avoid ELC!

I think the non French assistants got €50 for 3 weeks work (but it included bed+board)

Nope :( I'm hoping they'll still offer the temp clerical officer job again this summer, but nothings been said yet, AFAIK :( I was a CO last year in The Equality Tribunal, and I loved it. I really want to go back, so I'm just hoping the recession hasn't affected the people who take term time :(

What's CTYI? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but I've never known what it was :(

how old are you, OP, if i can ask?

Are ye all CTYIers? Well fancy that, so am I.

I went there, yeah, but I refuse to call myself a CTYIer.

    LOL ---^

Working in an Irish college is always an interesting way to spend the summer, but I know most people leave secondary school without enough Irish to make that an option.

go work in a summer camp in america or nz/oz. it was the most amazing 10weeks of my life. life changing. you meet so many great people, do so many different things, get to see a different country. you will laugh, cry, feel things you have never felt before. i was working for 10 weeks about 2 hours outside new york city ( the kids were there for 8 weeks) then i travelled for another 8 weeks with the people i had met at camp.
my days off i went to the city/lake/ shopping and nights off there was the pub/restaurants. plus there is always sneaking out to see 'that guy or girl your hooking up with'
you become instant friends with people, because its so intense and constant and I can honestly say the people I met there are some of my best friends. I have been to England to see some and I am going to nz/oz next summer to spend times with others.

    YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

Went looking on the net after reading this thread and found something just like this. I applied but the application was just "why do you want to apply?". Surely theres more to it than this? Could you elaborate a bit on how you got the job? I'm really interested, could be a brilliant way to celebrate the end of the LC!
    Thanks.

Basically I was lucky, because I applied directly to the camp, they took a liking to me and offered me a job, set me up with an agency so I didnt have to pay any money.... but the best and easiest way is to apply through an agency (ccusa/bunac.... I wouldnt recommend camp america) its expensive but worth while as they do most of the work for you. I was lucky I had a 'skill' (gymnastics) and thats what I ended up doing most of the summer but through an angency you will find a place no prob.

Bunac are doing their Dublin interviews on the 24th of Jan

although i would say that you will prob be in america for the lc results so just be weary of that

    Apply to volunteer at BARRETSTOWN!
I did it for 20 days last year- it was truly amazing.

Eh well afaik applications for paid positions are closing next week.
Volunteering last summer was awesome- you'll be minding kids from Ireland and all over Europe who have or have had serious illness.
You just kinda hang around with them, run around with them like a nutjob, do activities like canoeing and stuff, and get their food/medication etc.
Last year I was minding kids from Ireland, Scotland, Germany and Hungary. You don't really need anything to apply for a job but having another language really helps. You get interpreters, so don't worry if you don't speak Hungarian!
It's really awesome. a life-changing experience where you'll get to help kids that are/were sick while also experiencing cultures from all over Europe!
I even picked up some Hungarian last year! :p
Get your application in quick though!
