Stopping spam in VBulletin

I've set up and currently run a small VBulletin site. I've a huge problem with bots coming in and creating spam messages on just the first forum on the site. I've set up and currently run a small VBulletin site.

Anyone have any ideas on the best way to stop this? New users already have to type in the characters from the gif image when signing up.

First off, make sure you've upgraded to the latest version of vb

Then go over to vbulletin.org - there are a couple of plugins that use spamhaus etc., to check for open proxies etc., which can help cut down on the amount of junk you have to deal with
