Tonight I decided to take the psu out of my cab and give it a closer look (And clean, the thing was filthy)

Once it had been inspected and dusted off, I put it back in.

    Plugged the machine in.

    BANG!

    :(

Annoying, but I needed a new PSU with a variable output so didn't freak out yet.

Until I noticed that the monitor was actually still powering up.

    Wtf?

Can anyone explain this? The monitor will power up to a black screen, as if there's nothing plugged into the jamma harness. When there is.

For a moment I thought maybe it was the Neo MVS mobo that had fried, but it's fine. In a moment of crazyness I decided to plug the PGM mobo into the jamma harness as a test. Same thing, screen powers up but the board doesnt.

The PSU has two outputs. One goes to the monitor, the other to the jamma harness. So logic is telling me that the section of the PSU that controls the jamma part fried but the monitor power output part is fine.

    Anyone else know?

/edit - Okay so the PSU has nothing to do with the monitor. So I guess that just fried. Phew! freak out over.

can you put a voltmeter onto the power output to see if its working ?

Are you sure you put them exactly where they were meant to be cause you can of seriously! damaged your Cab!. did you get any Powersupply docs with your cabinet!.

Best of luck man, i say disconnect it till the morning, don't leave it connected over night! just incase you burn your house down it's unlikley but better to be safe then sorry.

Edit: I thought you Did something else ignore my post because its a different sitituation.

It sounds to me that you have just blown the DC unit in the PSU. That can easily be replaced. Cheaply too. About 30/40eur.

An arcade PSU has a 220Vac input and a 3 X 220Vac output (monitor depending) and DC voltages to supply the board, coin counter, speakers, credit board, etc

If you are not getting sound, a little light on the coin slot, a slight hum from the speakers ; most likely, the DC unit is fried. If only some of the said symptoms exist, well then some (not all) of the DC voltages are not being supplied and the DC unit is partially fried. I should know, I'm selling a busted one at the moment!

Ah yeah, I didn't disconnect anything power wise from the monitor or jamma harness. You'll see why when I put up some photos!

I didn't get any documentation with my cab at all. So I'm currently looking all over the net for stuff.

That' be great! I'll show you what it's like now, just took some pics. You'll have to excuse the hideousness of the thing. Looks like a fire hazzard waiting to happen.

Actually, anyone know what this cable is for? It's not connected to anything at all.
    P1110530.jpg

Here's where it gets ugly. The back has wad of snipped cables with four connecting to the harness. Lots of tape.

I only noticed this now and would explain the monitor still working. The powering coming in splits with one cable going to the psu and another going to the monitor. So I guess all that needs to be replaced is the PSU itself & connect the wires to the jamma harness.

Getting absolutely nothing but the monitor coming on. So I guess it has been completely fried!

Yep, think that's the way to go.

What I'm trying to figure out now is whether to go with the type I had -

    http://www.pbandjindustries.com/images/products/detail/80-0002-10-l.jpg

Or get one of these -

    http://www.jammaboards.com/store/15a-switching-power-supply-110w/prod_251.html

The first looks much easier to wire. But the second has an adjustable knob so I could increase power for the 6 slot mvs.

Which do you reckon? I'm a total newbie to this too as you know, so probably best to go with the one less likely to blow something up when I'm wiring it!

the loose cable might be a grounding cable ?

any oldish PCs should have the same power supply as that. I hope no one flicked the red toggle switch at the back ! a cousin of mine did that once, blew the PC :) good old US/EURO voltage switch ;)

The way your busted PSU was wired was a bit dangerous, I'm guessing that the wires were either twisted together or soldered; covering it with electrical tape has some safety drawbacks. If you decide to go with the same PSU, I would suggest that you crimp the wires together or use a screw terminal block.

I would recommend the adjustable PSU. It is safer to hardwire into the cab with its own screw terminals. Just make sure that the wattage is suitable for you CRT monitor.

I would also clean out all the dust from the back of the cab, it looks filthy. Either it is very old or the back cover is left open all the time, allowing all the dust to get in.

As much as I'd love one of those adjustable PSUs, I've been looking up some wiring diagrams and it seems a good bit beyond my capability. :(

Reckon I'm just going to have to go with one similar to what was already in it for the moment.

That wierd looking cable i believe is ground!, and i would just get a new psu as has been said before, and take the psu to a WEE, recycling plant!. to get rid of it!, hope all goes well, but that psu looked very dodgy, compared to the cabs i've had.

Indeed. As sad as I am that it's currently out of order (Just after getting a load of mvs carts too!), I'm happy it didnt blow while I was away. It's left running for long periods on occasion. Won't be doing that again..!
