Prices also don't include the additional 6.5% vat we pay

Getting to the checkout , Firefly to be shipped to Ireland changes from £7.97 to £8.43 , and the 24 box set changes from £86 to £91.89 , so there is an additional charge.

Yes... this is amazon applying the difference between UK 15% and Irish 21?% VAT, and paying this to the Irish gov.

Apparently retailers are supposed to do this if their imports exceed a certain level. However I've never heard of anyone else doing it. Does anyone else do it?

All very good deals even still. Babylon5 isn't available anymore... but is still here... http://www.sendit.com/sendit/9942610.product

these all are actually sent from dublin via an post. and can take over a week and a half to be delivered - even when just 2 miles away.
    Ridiculous.
But some very good deals especially the best tv series ever the west wing.

They dont have to apply the extra VAT for anything over any value as it is all the EU. Why we have to pay the 21.5% is cos its sent from here so its turned into an irish purchase with no importing necessary.

Despite the extra vat add-on, their prices are still very good for TV box sets I've found. I find their delivery very fast, usually get the things within 3 days(if they are dispatched from Dublin, that explains the speedy delivery).

Ordered the West Wing boxset last Monday to replace my worn out copies which had a few dodgey discs in it. Arrived wednesday in Cork. Anything I have ordered from Amazon in the last few months has arrived within 3 days max to Cork. You may just have been unlucky.

Dabs shouldnt. Dabs.ie stuff comes from England.
Better check what VAT i paid on my recent purchase from them.

    EDIT: it was 21.5%.
    So what dictates the VAT?
Their bank details is in Bolton in England. The items are sent from Bolton in England. Just the website has a .ie on it.
It is that the VAT paid in the EU is that of the country of purchase - not of delivery.
So what about Dabs.ie makes it an Irish purchase?
Company is registered in England or is it that is has an Irish VAT registration and that it applies that.

Yep, my Buffy boxset was dispatched on Tuesday the 6th and arrived in Dublin on Thursday 8th. Great deal, worked out at €58 altogether.

Why do they do it then? Wouldn't it be better if they just sent the items from the UK and charged the lower rate, if it's not illegal to do so?

    Thanks OP
Ordered Monday, arrived today Wednesday €58.20 all in (delivery & Irish 21.5% VAT), the money hasn't even been taken from my credit card yet.

    Sopranos. Complete. €89.98

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sopranos-Complete-HBO-Season-Deluxe/dp/B001DWEYW4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1231931175&sr=8-1

I know it's not as cheap as the other sets mentioned, but considering how much the Sopranos sets normally cost as individual bits, this is a good deal. Mad quick delivery too; i ordered it the weekend before christmas and it landed on Christmas Eve. Well impressed!

Some things are cheaper on Thehut.com ,but deliveries have frozen on the site.
I'm waiting for an order to ship since last week ,amazon usually ship within a few hours.

    IE 9978803B
which is why you paid the Irish VAT rate I guess..

In case people missed it the first time (like me) Babylon5 complete is back on Amazon, at an even cheaper price. £62.30 (including the Irish VAT element) which after shipping and conversion is probably under €70. I've placed an order for that and Buffy, plus Planet Earth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 346 ✭✭LeoGilly

You're better of getting thehut stuff from asda as you can buy with sterling and they offer free delivery.

I have found Amazon to be the best value for complete series box sets.

However, it is of course best to shop around for the best deal on stuff. I use http://www.dvdbargainalerts.co.uk/ to compare prices.

Some-one went to the trouble of posting up p&p rates, free delivery sites etc, not sure if its stickied or not. But using above price comparison site, factoring in the delivery prices (and vat in the case of amazon) gets you the best deal.

Any company Distance selling within the EU has to register for VAT in the destination country if its annual sales to that country exceed a certain threshold. IIRC it's somewhere around €200k in Ireland. Each country can set its own threshold.

So since Amazon sales to Ireland exceed the threshold it must register for Irish VAT and charge Irish VAT on Irish sales. If it was below the threshold it wouldn't have to register and thus would charge UK VAT.

Thanks for this explanation. It's the clearest comment so far on this issue. Interestingly, while I'm sure most people won't care, it does make buying from Amazon more patriotic! since some of the money will go to the government at this time of crisis.
