Over the past few days I have noticed my Microsoft Habu (wired gaming mouse)
lagging( onlyevery now and again, its not too bad at all) while I am browsing the internet, itunes, downloading....etc

Maybe its lagging because I only have about 40 mbs left on my hd...

COuld it be a sign that I need to free up some space or is it the mouse?;)

i remember having the same problem on a number of computers i had. i put it down to the system not getting shut down for a few weeks and vuse running in the background downloading as much as i could at the time.

i aslo had the problom in a duel screen system when quake3 or simular games using the quake3 engine were running id get lag. never could explain it becides blaming vuse/bad id support.

my mouse tends to lag if i go overboard on the multitasking. for e.g if i'm copying files to my NAS and playing iTunes everything grinds to a halt and iTunes is fiendish for using tonnes of ram.

So its probably down to the fact that your computer is using all its ram and its using virtual memory. Virtual memory is your harddrive acting as memory and given you have no hard drive space its slowing everything down.

    Hope this helps

Have you cleaned the mouse and the surface it's on? Check the laser sensor for dust.

Your mouse is not lagging, windows explorer is lagging.
1st: If you've only got 40megs free, burn some of that **** to a dvd and delete it.
2nd: Defrag your hard drive (YES it makes a difference, particularly if you use something like Perfect Disk or O&O Defrag)
3rd: Try shutting down or uninstalling some of the crap that's built up.

Also Utorrent is crazy easier on resources than Vuse (although you never mentioned vuse)

Ok, thanks Slut for the advice.

I right click my computer-> Manage and then find defrag..etc
If I do this will I loose anything?
Can you explain to me what will happen please before I do it?

Jesus Christ, free up some space.

Ideally you should keep 15% free space or better at all times. Even on a 40 gigabyte drive that means keeping 6GB free at all times. After all you wouldnt fill your bedroom to the brim with furnishing would you? Need to be able to walk around it a bit - the same loose theory applies to hard drives.

For the best defrag results, you must have at least 15% free space.

Furthermore to see whats taking up space you can download Treesize or Windirstat - I use the latter, others recommend the former.

And also download CCleaner - it will search for registry errors and automagically repair them. That will give your machine a boost as well.

All this does is look at the files on your hard drive. It tells you which ones are split all over the disk and then puts them back together. Think of it like this: you're in your room, and you print out a school essay on 10 pages. Spread the pages all over the room in different drawers. Then you have to run around getting them all and putting them in order before you can read it. Defragging is the equivalent of stapling your essay together and leaving it in one place.

The only time you might lose something as a result of a defrag is if you have a very major hardware problem. In which case your drive is about to die anyway.

    Ok.. 40Gigs is fine then.
    Here's what you do:
Go to the Windows Menu - Control Panel - Add/Remove Applications.
    Uninstall Vuze. It's a POS.

    Download:
uTorrent. Set it up so that's it's not opening hundreds of connections (Use the AutoSetup and tell it your line is ~2meg),
CCleaner. Run it and clear the junk out of your system.
SpyBot. Update it, run it, and check for bugs.

If you've got Yahoo / Google toolbars installed, I'd get rid of them. They're nothing more than opportunities for companies to hijack your PC to spy on you or try and sell you ****.

Run a defrag. Then, when your trial runs out, run another defrag once a month with the standard windows defrag.

    Oh, and clean your mouse.
