Is it my imagination or does there seem to be an applaing lack of radio shows or segments on any station that could be called a documentary or a non music fringe show or a special on current affairs that was themed to provide better understanding of the topic.

RTE do a couple, but there should be tons more really, is it a lack of cash?

    Any I don't know about?

No, its not your imagination, and thats why people like 'me' are going on & on all the time (on other Threads) about listening to the BBC.

To be fair, in terms of documentaries, dramas and current affairs specials, they are very expensive for independent stations to make - and have no guarantee of pulling a big audience to offset that.

However, things are getting better with the BCI Sound and Vision programme which is a cut of the licence fee that allows independent tv and radio broadcasters fund specialist shows like the ones you're talking about. I think about 200 of them were made last year, and the Minister for Communications increased the funding this year.

However, in any country in the world, the types of shows you mention are primarily made by the public service broadcaster (like the BBC ;)). That is what public service broadcasting is all about. So, if you're not hearing them, your question really lies at the door of RTE.
