Cycling Weekly, Friday 9th January 2009
When Lance Armstrong makes his official comeback to professional cycling at the Tour Down Under in Australia this month, he will be flanked by an elite police security team.

Organisers of the Australian stage race have been liaising with local police to organise sufficient security for the seven-times Tour de France winner according to a report on Adelaide Now. Protection has been sought as race organisers are unsure of how the crowds will react to Armstrong's presence.

The police security team will travel with Armstrong during training rides and comes in addition to the Texan star's personal security staff. Exact details of Armstrong's security will not be revealed, for obvious reasons. However, police will restrict public access to areas where the star is training if the need arises.

Armstrong is currently training in Hawaii, and is expected to touch down in Australia early next week for final pre-race preparations. The six-stage Tour Down Under runs from January 20-25 and is based entirely in and around Adelaide, South Australia.

Imagine if he actually comes to the Tour Of Ireland ...

' Howaya Buddy, so, how much is yer bike worth? Can I have a go, ah go on, let us have a go!''

the thing is though, there probably is a real chance that someone might push him off the bike.

if i spent a couple of days drinking lager out of a clog on the side of an alp, and then saw the caravan coming through, i'm pretty sure i'd have a little voice in my head saying "go for it tom!! this is your chance for lasting infamy!!" by the time the peloton arrived i'd by like dougal and the red button.

and there are others like me.

I think if he hadn't made such a big fuss of :

' Oh my god the fans are going to want to kill me, and if not the fans, the other riders, and id not them, Alqaeda, and if not them ... the aliens' ..., it wouldn't have been so risky. Right now he looks like a complete OTT morron who thinks he deserves a papamobile type escort for being so desperately great...

I would be surprised if someone didnt try something stupid during the year (regarding lance and cycling, im sure stupid things happen all the time).

My brother got me the "lance armstrong training program" for christmas, and after reading it I wouldn't mind giving him a push. "Isn't lance great", "what would lance do" and "cofidis and europeans are bastards" were some of the main themes, very little about proper training.

I wouldn't be surprised if he encountered some Beer Throwing, a la Paris-Roubaix 2008.

Be aware, if you throw beer, someone could go all Cantona on your ass.
