The FTSE and the DOW are both below where they started the week. I'm discounting what went before that because IMO Monday was the first day of "real" trading this year and is a true barrometer of the markets, not what went before

The present rally has seen some exellent gains since dec 08 with some irish stocks up 40% elan, IL&p etc Are we in a bottoming process which could see stocks swinging e.g + and - 20% for next 2Q with possibly a rally at late 3Q-4th quarter.

I think the second phase of the Bear market rally has kicked off. I feel that there will be big losses in the next 2 days and over next week. The start of January was only a temporary bull rally in a Bear Market.
The losses may be huge ! I have been waiting for the second wave to kick off and i think it just has!!

Bought il&p this morn as i felt yesterdays sell was overdone, aib-il&p are slightly up i guess traders are hoping for a possible suprise with ecb intrest rate reduction being more than the expected 0.5% but i cant see trichet going lower than 0.5 mark, Looks like stocks could see large falls possibly after obamas take up of office later next week.

I went long the S&P Thursday near the low , I dont normally hold futures positions very long, but there is a good chance now that this rally goes out to Mar/Apr before a possible new leg down

Silverharp, are you expecting global stocks to have a slight rally with obamas take up of office tuesday.

The test of the higher lows last week was pretty similar to other post crash years. In general terms I would see something like a rising wedge out to April. I've no idea what will happen on a particular day I would just say that for the US markets it looks like the lows are in for a while, also commodities, gold stocks etc should have a good run for the next couple of months.

Hi folks. you all sound like you know what you are talking about so as a complete novice with no clue can you give us a bit of advice please. I entered a lock in bond for 4 years where the investment is invested in a basket of 25 companies, all of whom appear to me large corps across a wide cross section of sectors of the business world, eg Banking, Pharmacuetical, Electrics/tronics, energy. My question is this, am i too cynical to think that no monies have been invested on my behalf and provider is pocketing interest? bi-annual reports have shown no growth positive/negative!! ( mind you principle is secured). Finally any advice on where to view the performance of basket companies on either a retrospective or ongoing basis. Thank you.
