Excel question - Macro, I think...

In my job I work with a lot of spreadsheets. Every week or more, some new spreadsheets are published with the latest data on it. They contain huge amounts of information and imo are badly arranged formatted. So, every time a new ones comes out I have to reformat it to my liking: deleting lots of irrelevant columns, and sorting it so I have the info I need first etc.

Is there a way to record a macro or something so i click a button and it does it for me? Cuase right now it takes me a few mins every time, it would be nice to be able to automate it.

I tried recording a macro but when I get a new one it does not seem to be saved so i can't apply it - I'm sure I'm doing something wrong though.

    Cheers

    Thats a tough one.

If the relevant (constantly) updated data was centralised into a database and could be accessed from there using specific fixed field names, that job might be easier in creating a better working macro.
Others here I'm sure will help better given time.

Macros are exactly what you need. I do the same on a certain file I use in excel every day.

It sounds to me like you are saving the macro in the actually workbook. You need to save it in your personal.xls

Try recording it again or see if there is an option within your macros (in an old worksheet you did) to save it to your personal.xls.

If it is saved in your personal.xls you can run the macro on ANY worksheet/book.

You can even export and import it from one PC to another by exporting your personal.xls. Note if you ar on 2007 it is .xlsb

Seconding Excel macros as being the solution - as long as the spreadsheets always arrive in the same (bad) format.
