I'd take a pay decrease but I wouldn't take a 6 month contract. You'd be crazy to at the moment, you could end up with nothing.

Would have to agree with MagicMarker on this.

For the sake of €2k a year I would given that it would make me happier. However as you've said it's only a 6 month contract so I'd be hesitant to do so in this case.

If you're gettting better experience 2 K isn't much of a difference. I'd insist on a 12 month contract at a minimum though.

What if there is no busy Oct- Nov period.

It's a big chance to be fair. In the current climate I woudn't take it. They might just hire your to cover a shortfall and you're almost guaranteed a downturn in the next six months as everything contracts and then, last in.............

If you have a years contract you may be able to negotiate a better severance anyway.

Look- ask. It's not going to help and they're not going to hold it against you. And best of luck whatever you decide.

If you are very unhappy in the job you should move. I worked in a practice that was finding cashflow difficult and it wasn't a nice working environment.

Salary Reduction is nothing if you are getting sick from working in a place you dislike.

However beware of the fields are always greener scenario.

When making the decision you should always prepare for the worst i.e. the job only lasting six months

    good luck with your decision

I think you need to consider whether the experience you'll get over the 6 months is worth the risk - in other words will you find another job quicker with this 6mths experience? If yes, then might be worth the risk, if no, then you've more to lose than gain out of it. Sure it'll get you out of your current job, but in 6 mths time you could well have no job at all. Can you afford to be out of work?

I'm looking for a new job too and I'm very unhappy in my current post. I'm willing to take a salary drop too of up to £2k (can't afford to drop any more than that), but it needs to be into another permanent job or at least a 2 year fixed term. I couldn't take the risk of being out of a job completely in 6 months time.

Ultimately it's your decision that you need to make, although in the same position, I'd bide my time rather than leaving my permanent job that I've been in for a few years to go to a potential 6 mths post and have nothing at the end it.

Whilst most jobs appear to be 'permanent', the reality is that you will have 1 months notice with most of them. The only difference is how you will be treated if they let you go. If you have been with an employer more than 1 year you are entitled to 2 weeks redundancy pay (up to about €600_ for each year of service - so this is the entitlement that you are giving up if you decide to move (plus the 2k reduction in salary).

Whilst i would normally say if you are not happy then move on to something else, today's employment climate is horrendous and will get worse before it gets better. If you have financial commitments each month go with whichever employer has the most chance of employing you in the longer term.

To receive statutory redundancy payment you need to work 2 years with the employer, of course if your contract provides that you will get a redundancy after shorter time then you have entitlement arising from the contract.
IMHO stay with the job - by mid 2009 it will be really difficult to find a (descent) job.
