I am. Started in late October in our place, and was combined with the hamper league. The format is 14 hole SF comp each Sat and Sun. 14/18th's of your full H/C. 10 - 12 teams are created with 6-7 players in each team. The top 4, after 8 - 10 weeks play a semi and then final.

They also use the winter league in our place, as a means for selecting various inter club teams, such as the Jimmy Bruen, Pierce Purcell etc...You can opt in or out for selection.

Personally, I'm doing ok with a win and 2 places over the last few weeks, but the team I am in did not qualify for the semis. I also won't have the time to commit to any inter club stuff this year.

After Christmas we revert to a 9 hole re-entry comp until full play is resumed. This is also used as a means to gauge/blood good inter club players.

Ours started last week and runs until the end of February. 12 holes stableford each week (2/3s handicap) and it's your best 5 scores from the 8 weeks which count. Then there is an overall winner. Pretty simple format.

I've alot of work to do if i'm to challenge. Managed just 16 points last weekend.

i've being out of the game for 3 years but the format is still the same in our place-they play every saturday from October to March. 18 hole strokes.

    The top 8 cards count.

They used to alternate the tee's from the whites to the championship tees.

It was great. Strokes in that type of harsh conditions (course and weather) really tighten's up ur game.

Notice most of what i say is in the past tense............wwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaa - want to get out playing again!!

Ours is starting next Sunday. There are 12 teams of 12-14 players on each team. Teams are divided into two groups and each team plays the 6 teams from the other group. Points system is based on individual matches won.The top two in each group qualify for a semi final and final.

Each week it will be either scotch foursomes, fourball or singles matchplay. So most weeks there will be 5 points available and on the singles weeks there will be 10 points available.Every individual will play 5 of the 6 weeks and you will always be in opposition of someone with a similar handicap to yourself.

Its a shotgun start so everyone is back into the clubhouse at the same time to see how their team got on, so club atmosphere and banter is at its highest.

That is the most savage winter golf idea I've ever heard. It must be like a little Ryder Cup every week!

What's the policy on people not being able to play one of the weekends? If you have no opponent you may not have a game?

Not all the players on the team plays each week so if you are not scheduled to play you could still be called in as a sub. There could be 3/4 subs a week so the player closest in handicap to the person who is missing plays.

Sometimes this can lead to there being a big gap in handicaps and shots having to be given but its all a bit of fun.

they have always tried to name each team whether it be a colour, an occupation or a country so that definitely adds colour to the proceedings and the night of the final there is a big dinner and presentation and each team are usually dressed up or the table is dressed to represent their country/colour etc...

How are the teams selected? Do the organisers ensure that each team has players with hcaps from low to high?

What sort of entry fee is charged?

It's a great idea and one which I'm sure keeps the weekly playing numbers high and course/bar revenue ticking over.

Starting next week for 5 weeks, teams of 6 men & 1 woman, picked at random by committee, full points score each week, 18 holes, then the top 8 teams play 1v1 matchplay(like inter-club match) then semi final and final.

the lowest 12 that enter are each put on a team. the next group of players of similar/same handicaps are allocated/drawn onto a team. There are 4 ladies on each team as well and they are allocated similarly. There may be a slight difference of 3/4 shots between the low guys but once you get to the 3rd and 4th on each team there will be no more than a shot difference in handicap.

Its only 12 holes each week, but that is plenty and the total cost for the 6 weeks is 20 euro.
