Anyone know the process for clearing a 78 car. Does one have to bring the car to customs office ? Is v5 the only document needed ?:rolleyes:confused:(

    Hey Shawnee,
As far as I know it should be nice n'easy.. Now that we are in the wonderful '09 your car is officially exempt as they consider that it has paid it's dues..
Anytime I registered a classic before I brought the car and the V5 (if you have it). As long as you can prove it's age, they'll issue you with a reg number for a very small fee.
If the car is from outside the E.U. it's a little trickier and will be subject to VAT (There a LOADS of people on here that know much more about this than I do and I'd be happy to stand corrected lads).
What type of car is it and what country did it live?

It's pretty straightforward, just bring the car and the V5 to the VRO along with the €50.

nowadays you might not even need to take the car..they dont seem to inspect them anymore if they are 30+

All they wanted from me was the V5 and 50 yoyo (maybe ring before you travel to make sure)

From my experience if they have the exact make and model as described on the existing registration form on the computer then they dont need to see it. If there isnt an exact match then they take a stroll out for a gawk:).

Yep,if you try to register an imported Datsun it shows on their computer as a Nissan, and they dont want to change it!

They did inspect my last import, he even asked me if it was left hand drive...

...I simply dropped my jaw and pointed to the steering wheel.:D

Got my 78 merc cleared yesterday, straightforward enough. Girl at desk had to find the exact model on her computer. For a while she could only find a lefthooker 280ce and we might be moving the wheel across. In the end she clicked and it was there. The day being on the chilly side , she said it was not worth going out for the 50 euro.:DXD . Will send a few pics when I give her a good wash today.
