Is anyone else having serious problems accessing Gaire today? I'm a regular on that message boards and for some reason today I can't access Gaire at all.:(

Anyone else in the same situation?

    Hi JK

I'm having problems as well, It looks like it's a problem with the company that hosts the gaire.com website.

Their DNS servers were down for a while, which would indicate a serious network outtage.

Dns servers came back on a few minutes ago, so it will probably be back up and running soon.

I've looked at the message boards on gaire and they are hilarious! It appears to be the same few people who turn every thread into one line in jokes where they all pat each other on the back, including the rolleeyes, smiley faces, and lol's at every opportunity. Any attempt there to have a discussion about anything invariably turns into the same handful of people ruining almost every attempt at discussion. Anyone who thinks boards is overmoderated should look at http://www.gaire.com/e/f/new.asp and see how poor moderation can ruin a message board site. Compared to the message boards on boards.ie, gaire is parochial, the mods have favourites, and the mods themselves are responsible for most of the bullying and nastiness on what appears to be a very poorly run site.

It is quite funny tho, and we log in there once every couple of months to see the same people saying the same things to the other same people, with the same in-jokes. One thing which often stikes us is the level of intolerance shown to others not in the "in group", from a group of people who seem to rush to take offence and claim that everyone else is being intolerant to them! I think its called invincible ignorance.

Mainly , tho, its the lack of intelligence on the message boards there which stands out, and the attempts by the moderators to ensure anyone who has interesting or intelligent views is squashed out, so they can continue their in jokes, rolleeyes and so on.

Have a look at http://www.gaire.com/e/f/new.asp and then appreciate what a well run, diverse, and moderated site boards.ie is by comparison.

Gaire has a group of members that post inanely on a daily basis. It also has a group of members that post popular news items on a daily basis. Then there are the posters who post and discuss serious news items, others who post regarding TV items on a daily...

Then there are the hardcore members who post on all of these topics, who have their in-jokes and close groups amongst themselves. However newbies are welcomed with open arms unless of course those new people come to troll - and that is when the fun starts.

It seems to me that it is just like any other message board; only restricted by catering to the LGBTQ community and different by the fact that it has regular meet-ups of members.

I suppose like anything else, you only get out of it what you put in.

I've had a look at the link myself. While i don't find it funny as a previous poster does, part of what he/she says in undoubtedly true. It does seem to be the same group of 6 or 8 people who seem to use the message boards more as a chat room than traditional message boards. Occasionally, in a thread you can see a couple of this group appear to take pleasure out of being a little nasty towards others. It's not a site I'd recommend to anyone to become involved, and would have no reason to join or even look at again. It seems immature, lacking much intelligence, and poorly supervised.

Firstly, I don't post on Gaire. I think it is bad form for one LGBT message board to be dissing another one and hope the forum mods lock this when they see it (regardless of the fact that it was a zombie thread obviously resurrected to troll).

    Please don't resurrect old threads.
