If anyone has a good knowledge of hymn, spirituals, gospel music, blues etc. that would have been used by American slaves, chain gangs, oppressed musical types AND the Irish variety of that could they get in touch with me? I need a distinctive song for an art piece. I'd really appreciate it as I want it to be good and I'm unsure where to get this information apart from the net.

There's plenty of books on the history of Blues and Jazz, tracing right back to the roots. I've a great book on Jazz which gives a chronology of it's development that'd be good, but I can't remember the title. Best bet is to source this kind of material and from there, you'll get examples of songs, artists, etc that you can then find what you're looking for from.

I could not imagine anything more suited than Swing Low Sweet Chariot, it's the genuine article and a great song. You'll find plenty of quality versions to use. The versions by Paul Robeson or Simon Estes are particularly good.
