I was thinking of buying a ps3 on Ebay from AMerica or Amazon. Is it a good idea? is there any disadvantages?

All games are region-free on the PS3. Blu-Ray films will be mostly region locked. You shouldn't have any problems tbh, my cousin got his son a PS3 for Christmas which is working fine.

Was thinking of doing the same thing. The games are region free and though the Blu-Ray is region coded, most Blu-rays are region free (i think about 70%). You can use this website to check http://bluray.liesinc.net/.
