    Hello,
Every single Sunday for the past number of weeks we have had trespassers on our farm land hunting with guns. Part of the land is a fully registered game/wildlife reserve meaning no hunting is permitted.

I am not willing to approach the persons as I'm quite a small guy and quite frankly they have guns. End of.

I know the AGS are not able/willing to take any action on the trespassing offence - this is up to the wildlife officers whom have been informed several times with car registration numbers.

My question is: Would the Gardai attend if I mentioned that the trespassers had weapons? Is there a gun license that can be checked? I think even the sight of a Garda car would frighten the heck out of the hunters to be honest.

Basically, all i want is the hunters to get such a fright that they would not be willing to come back onto the land ever again.

I managed to stop 3 people last Sunday, from the relative safety of my car and I told them to get off the land - I took the registration number from the car as normal and told them that I was calling the cops (just to see what reaction I got), but by the time I had U-Turned they had gone so fast that there the blue smoke and skid marks from the car and I didn't see what direction they can gone.

I fully understand the Gardai are not able to follow-up on the trespassing however is there anything in relation to the gun laws that could be used to even frighten off the hunters?

We have plenty of signs up, however these signs are still ignored - in fact they actually shoot OVER the signs!

    With Regards,
    Joe Leavy

Not a problem where I am so perhaps I wont be spot on here but someone using a licensed firearm where they are not entitled to should be getting a response.

Presuming it is licensed of course

Trespass is trespass no matter what way you look at it. The reason why they tore off is because if a patrol car was sent out they could be looking at some bother when renewing their licences or maybe to the point of the local Super having a serious word with them.
My advice is to contact your local station and informed them of the problem. Get the reg numbers of the cars first and DO tell the guard that firearms are present. It may not be dealt with there and then but it is very easy to track down the firearm owners

Joe, you might consider posting this on the shooting thread to get some feedback from there. I doubt very much you would be in danger from people with guns, just some people may not be as reasonable to 'move on & not come back' as others are when requested to. You are entitled to preserve the land and this should be respected.

Get a bigger gun than them. Or just shout at them that you are going to ring the cops if they dont feck off. You said you are small so that will make it hard for them to hit you but to be sure keep running in a zig zag fashion while you are shouting at them.

I'm under the impression tresspass with a firearm is an offence in itself.

There a quite a few people on the shooting forum(under sports) will send you in the right direction.

FOr somereason the story of the guy ringing to get the cops because someone was robbing his shead then fabricating a story when he was told no one was availible comes to mind. I think i'm kust in that mood today
