I hope you all know what I'm talking about when I'm trying to explain this. I was wondering, do you know the cable that connect phone lines to routers and all that? Well my router is downstairs. And I would like Wired, to see if the connections would be better. I also have a "place" in my room were I can connect the router to the wall via the phone wire connection thingy. And what I was wondering was is there a cable that can connect to the wall phone thingy and then connect to the playstation. I know all about Ethernet cables but I dont have my router upstairs and ethernet cables doesn't go into my wall :p

Let me know thanks. Ps. I didn't know the name of some things so I just used "thingy"

You mean a wire straight from the wall to your ps3?

I beleive that would result in ps3 dialup.

    I may stand corrected though

    Invest in a wireless router?

I have a wireless router. And it works perfectly, besides the sh.it connection half the time and the constant "Erruption" yoke. I just head Wired was better and is bound to give you Nat1. Right .. ?

You can get NAT1 with wireless. If your not getting it, its most likely your firewall. I can help if your with eircom and have an eircom provided router.

yungjoshy, gone from us again ?

wired wont necessarily give you nat 1 at all at all, !
just sounds like you need to configure the ports right ?

as mgsrocks says, tis easy do with an eircom router, the latest firmware for it even has built in automatic port forward specifically for PSN
whats your router, whats your nat wirelessly ?

I bought a set of powerline adaptors. One plugs into a power socket beside your router and has a slot for an ethernet cable.

The other plugs into whatever power socket you like, then you just run a ethernet cable from that plug to your ps3.

Cost about 50e on Ebay incl packaging (solwise ones I got). Generally faster than wireless to be honest.

if theres a phone line jack on the wall in your room can you just move the router to there and plug the router into the wall, then plug an ethernet cable into the ps3.

I'll agree with the powerline adapters. Picked up a pair of the Devolo ones some stage last year and works like a charm! Best thing you can get to wired connection if you cant put your router near your PS3.

sorry to hijack someone elses topic, but....that sounds like exactly what i am after, i had never heard of this before, i am using a switch for my ps3 at the moment but i need to move the ps3 to my room to facilitate the champions league :( i was going to have a cable routed to my room, but its quite a distance from the source, so a little impractical.

I jut had a look at the solwise website http://www.solwise.ie/net-powerline-av-push.htm and it looks like it is easy to set up, which would be right up my street, as anything to do with connections/routers/broadband gives me a head melt!! so for a beginner like me should there be anything i need to look out for? any catches or downsides?? have to say i'm sold on the idea, but sounds a bit too good to be true!!! any feedback would be great, thanks :)

I've been using the high speed starter kit from Devolo for over a year. I haven't come across any problems since I started using them. This particular brand comes complete with the cables to connect into your router and PS3. No installation required. Just plug in and off you go. I'm sure they're all quite similar. They are not supposed to be plugged into surge protected extension leads. My setup is 1 plugged into a 4 plug standard extension cable downstairs and the other plugged into a 2 plug extension lead upstairs in my bedroom. I'm with UPC broadband and when connected this way with my PS3 I get wired connection Nat Type 2. Hope that helps you in some way. I swear by them!!

Mine are these by the way
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/2-X-SOLWISE-85MBPS-HOMEPLUG-ETHERNET-NETWORK-ADAPTORS_W0QQitemZ290218123876QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Networking_SM?hash=item290218123876&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Question for eioneill, are yours 200mps? mine are 85mps Does it matter if I only have a 3mb connection?

Also my PS3 worked online as soon as I plugged in the ethernet cable, does this mean I am Nat 1 or 2?

    1 is better right?

Mine are the 85Mbps ones. I'm presuming thats what yours are aswell. That speed is well enough for online gaming on your PS3. I think the 200Mbps are tailored for streaming HD content.

3Mb is sufficient for online gaming. I didn't have any problems when I was previously on 2Mb broadband.

To check your Nat Type. Go into Network settings on your PS3 and then Internet Connection Test. When test is complete the bottom line will tell you your Nat Type.

In regards to Nat Type 1 being better than 2. That question is still debatable. Anyone who has Nat type 2 will say they have no problems and so will Nat type 1 peeps. Nat Type 1 is connected directly to the internet. Nat Type 2 is connected through your router. Only people I know that have Nat Type 1 is Eircom customers logging in using PPPoE username and password. This would only be a problem if some geek comes up with a virus for PS3's because there is no firewall protecting the PS3. why someone would do this is beyond me. But hey stranger things have happened

    Thanks for that.

No bother! Once your not Nat Type 3 you'll be grand
