When to sell a lens

I have a 10-22, nifty fifty and a tamron 17-50. I haven't seen much of a need to use the tamron as much because I like the 1.8 on the 50mm. If I sold it, I'd be missing out on a zoom between 22 to 50. I'm gonna keep it as the only replacement would be an L lens and it's great lens.

This trail of thought led me to wonder if you have any rules of thumb on deciding when to sell a lens.

whenever i can afford a better one, on a like-for-like basis !

i started out with the kit lens; got the nifty fifty cause it was cheap; got a 55-200 cheap cause i wanted to take nature photos.

Then the image quality of the nifty fifty was so impressive that i had to upgrade my kit lens (to a sigma 17-70).

Now I'm thinking i'd have to get something like an 70-200 F4L to see a drastic improvement, but thats getting into serious money for my hobby.... maybe next year.
