a few general dental Qs

I'm a 27yo and male and i've been thinking about getting some dental work done to help the cause. It's been quite a while since I've visited a dentist, btw. I'll be Grateful for any help and advice.

I have a wide but gummy smile and a narrow upper jaw (which is the predominant feature). I have a little overcrowding on my lower jaw but nothing serious. I also have a peg tooth on the left upper jaw and which is cocked inwards enough to look like it's missing. Also a baby tooth on the RHS. I've never had any wisdom teeth come down either.

Generally, I'm not overburdened with good looks and I don't want to go down the road of years of expensive dental work to become an ugly dude with a Hollywood smile, it would probably work against me. I wouldn't mind just making a better fist of what I was born with.

I know you're going to tell me to see my dentist but I'd be embarrassed to expose my ignorance on such matters and I would be afraid of ommiting important questions. My older sister is also getting some work done and as time goes on, she is convinced that her guy has slightly mis-represented what can be achieved ("he's a good salesman", she says) so please point me in the right direction.
